I had no oars, but managed to get through without striking any rocks, and landed a mile and a half below the supplies. I hope the 'movies' are good. "Sincerely yours, A westward-bound train was bearing me across the Mojave Desert one day in May.
Louise does sometimes call him quite affectionately "Overland." For five years he had journeyed back and forth between the little desert station on the Mojave and the range to the north. The townspeople paid scant attention to him. He was simply another "desert rat" obsessed with the idea that gold was to be found in those northern hills. He bought supplies and paid grudgingly.
"We make it worth Disbrow's while to do it. We go to him and say, 'Mr. Disbrow, you manage the politics for the Mojave railroad, and what you say goes with your Board of Directors. We want you to adopt our candidate for Railroad Commissioner for the third district. How much do you want for doing it? I KNOW we can buy Disbrow. That gives us one Commissioner. We need not bother about that any more.
The pessimism that filled the air had reached Andrew Malden, and he sat by the fire all winter nursing it. If he could sell the Cove Mine but what was there to sell? And he gave it up as a futile project. Then there came news of a rich strike of gold in Shasta county, and a little later in the far south the deserts of the Mojave were found to glitter.
Where the carrion is, there will the buzzards be gathered together, and in three days' journey you will not sight another one. The way up from Mojave to Red Butte is all desertness, affording no pasture and scarcely a rill of water. In a year of little rain in the south, flocks and herds were driven to the number of thousands along this road to the perennial pastures of the high ranges.
In low water the channels shifted back and forth first choked with sand on one side of the stream, then on the other. While the total fall from Fort Mojave, a few miles above Needles, to the Gulf is only 525 feet, considerable of that fall came in short sections, first with a swift descent, then in a quiet stretch. Even in the high-water stage I was finding some such places.
That was at night, and I couldn't do nothin' until daylight, so I got a good sleep and the next mornin' I started for Mojave. I know it pretty well, and there was no danger of gittin' lost. At nightfall I found your horses and ponchos the horses was dead, poor things.
It is well that this is so, for it helps to dispel an illusion of the imaginative and impressionable when first they visit San Pasqual the illusion that they are in prison. The basin that lies between these mountains is the waste known as the Mojave desert.
The tiny stream, cold and clear, the vegetation, in a region otherwise barren-gray and burning, the arid Mojave with its blistering heat, the trees, the painted rocks, ochre, copper, bronze, red, gray, and dim lilac in the distances, the gracious shade, the little burro, half ludicrous, half pathetic in its stolid acceptance of circumstances, all had a charm for him that soothed and satisfied his restlessness.
There are mountain sheep to the east, in the mountains of the Mojave and Colorado deserts, but they are almost unmolested by the hunters of the seaboard country, and, except in rare instances, are no longer found in the reserves.
