Now, for instance, when you go to work and whip anybody, or hang 'em, or burn 'em up for not believin' as you do, that is goin' too fur. It has been done though, time and agin, in the world's history, and mebby will be agin. But it hain't reasonable. Now what good will doctrines o' any kind do to anybody after they are burnt up or choked to death? You see such things hain't bein' megum.

"Oh," sez she, "it hain't no matter about that; I I I somehow I don't feel like rehearsin' it as it was." Sez she, "I guess I shall make some changes in it before I rehearse it agin." Sez I, "You lay out to make a more mean thing of it, more megum." "Yes," sez she, in faint axents, "I am a-thinkin' of it."

"Well," sez I, "we mustn't forgit to be megum, Arvilly; we mustn't forgit in our indignation all the good they do carryin' folks from hether to yon for almost nothin'." "Well, they no need to act more heartless than Nero or King Herod. I don't believe that old Nero himself would done this; I believe he would gin two dollars for Willie Henzy." And I sez, "I never neighbored with Mr. Nero.

"Wall," sez I, "you must do as you are a mind to, with fear and tremblin'." I thought mebby quotin' Scripture to him would kinder quell him down, for he wuz fearfully agitated and wrought up about the Everlastin' spring. And he begun at once to calculate on it, on how much he could drink of it, if he begun early in the mornin' and drinked late at night. But I kep' on megum.

I felt proud on 'em to see their onbroken dignity and simplicity of mean. And, thinkses I, the demeanor of them books is a lesson to Republics how to act before Royalties; not a-backin' up and a-actin', not put out a mite, not forward, and not too backward jest about megum.

Now it seems to me that in most all of these different doctrines and beliefs, there is a grain of truth, and if folks would only kinder hold onto that grain, and hold themselves stiddy while they held onto it, they would be better off. But most folks when they go to follerin' off a doctrine, they foller too fur, they hain't megum enough.

Of which, more anon, and bimeby. And Drusilly Sypher, Deacon Sypherses wife, almost had a spazzum, caused by admiration and bein' so highly tickled. I myself didn't shed any tears, as I have said heretofore. And what kep' me calmer wuz, I knew, I knew from the bottom of my heart, that she went too fur, she wuzn't megum enough.

Sez he, "They needn't build it up on my account, for I won't patronize 'em any more!" And I told him, "I guessed he wouldn't be missed, specially Sundays and holidays." And he said, "Miss me or not, they needn't try to git me there agin, and they may jest as well give up hopin' to, first as last." Sez I, "Can't you be megum, Josiah?

And he snapped me up enough to take my head off, and said that he "couldn't always be calm and wuzn't goin' to try to be." "No," sez I reasonable, "you've got to be megum in that, or in eatin' bread and milk; of course, you could kill yourself on that, though it seems innocent and harmless; you can carry everything too fur."
