The waves were so steep that when the sloop plunged down the slope of one the rain swept on over my head and only rattled upon my sail. Ragged masses of cloud swept across the sky. In the distance it really seemed as though the waves leaped up and met these low-hung clouds. And how I strained my eyes for some speck to give me hope of rescue!

It was appalling odds, and I guess no darn fool could have been found to back that bird's chance of winning through. Then he showed that he had at least one trump up his sleeve. A shape like unto the shape of a silken kite came floating in ample circles across the low-hung sky.

Wyllard could barely make out the schooner, which had apparently followed them, a blur of dusky canvas against a bank of haze, and then as the boat slid down into a hollow there was nothing but the low-hung, lowering sky. It was evident to him that if they were to make a landing it must be done promptly. "We'll pull around the point first, anyway," he decided.

The semi-darkness of the hut, the outline of the moon afar through the uncurtained window these swam before her.... Suddenly her eyes riveted on that curtainless window and she uttered a terrifying cry. Ruggam turned. Outlined in the window aperture against the low-hung moon Martin Wiley, the murdered deputy, was staring into the cabin! From the fugitive's throat came a gurgle.

"Ah!" thought Chip, "I am getting to be a merchant of the right sort, I see, and by the time he is ready to change that low-hung little chariot for the hard, angular ebony with raven plumes, I shall be ready to step into the other plump little vehicle, which is really so nice and cozy."

Through the stillness and the blackness of the night came every now and then the high-pitched undulating wails of women, that no one answered-for, under that Tophet-lid of blackness, punctured by the low-hung, steel-white stars, men neither knew nor cared whose child had died. Life and hell-hot torture and indifference all three were one.

One evening, on entering the city, Nature seemed to be planning to run the gaily attired tourists from the place. How sombre and sullen appeared the sea, seen through the dim perspective of the murky, mist-drenched air. Over this vast expanse, low-hung clouds trailed their gray tattered edges in long misty streaks which hid the setting sun.

Locke hailed a passing taxicab, gave a hurried direction to the chauffeur, and jumped in. The taxi snorted, cut out open, and jumped forward as the driver clumsily shifted the worn gears. But out of the shadows there glided a low-hung runabout with a purling motor that without effort kept Locke's taxi just in sight without seeming to be following.

Farr pointed down the street. Not far away a low-hung transparency heralded "The Square Deal Club." Mr. Converse gazed in that direction and hesitated a few moments longer. "You assure me that it's not a mere political rally?" "I do, sir!" Then the son of General Converse gallantly extended his arm. "I'll be glad to be escorted by you, Mr. Farr," he said.

The interior rigging, which was adopted with a view to decreasing air resistance, supports a low-hung car from the centre of the envelope; steering is accomplished by means of horizontal planes fixed on the envelope at the stern, and vertical planes depending beneath the envelope, also at the stern end. One of the most successful of French pre-war dirigibles was a Clement Bayard built in 1912.
