For the amorous couple, plagued by his wrangling, swore to get rid of him. M. Mariette had no little influence. He got a lettre de cachet in the name of that unhappy Quonion. On a certain day the perfidious woman said to her husband: "Take me, I beg of you, on Sunday next out to dinner somewhere in the country. I promise myself uncommon pleasure from such an excursion."

He will not go far; these irregularities are common in men who do great things afterwards " "And he is sleeping upstairs, without a word of this to his father," exclaimed the Marquis. "Sleeping innocently as a child who has merely got five or six little bourgeoises into trouble, and now must have duchesses," returned the Chevalier. "Why, he deserves a lettre de cachet!"

As he said this, poor Jean shuddered at the thought of those terrible words about the lettre de cachet. Perhaps the innkeeper's words reminded Isidore that his uncle, the Baron de Valricour, or possibly the Marquis de Montcalm himself, might yet do something for him, if indeed anything could be done. At all events it was useless to hope for aid from anyone in France.

As the first notes of La Lettre d'Amour brought a pause of silence in the restaurant, Corbin, who was talking at the moment, interrupted himself abruptly, and turned in his chair. All through the evening he had been conscious of the near presence of the young musician.

The battle-field was strewed with floods of ink, and the literati pelted each other with ferocious lampoons. Among the literature of this controversy, one pamphlet has an imperishable place, Rousseau's famous "Lettre sur la Musique Française," in which the great sentimentalist espoused the cause of Italian music with an eloquence and acrimony rarely surpassed.

Voltaire, Beuchot's edition, tom. xxxvii. Lettre xii., p. 172.

The letter itself ran: "Dear Sir, The frend of Etienne D'Alenconrt, he can write you he can send you a lettre from the Grand Calumet, his island that is green, Monsieur, and full of sweet berries. If you would come, Mossier, you would find Etienne and his mother reddy to do all they can. Still, Monsieur shall in this please alway himself, the friend and benefactor of Etienne Chezy D'Alencourt."

It was a lettre de cachet, one of those warrants by which a man might, without warning to his friends or any charge laid, be arrested and imprisoned in one of those fortresses whose walls were so many living graves. He took it to the lodgings of Répentigny. "Pierre, I am on the campaign against your namesake!" exclaimed he. "Then you have heard the latest news?" "Not if it is fresh to-day."

It was, perhaps, the darkest moment in Jewish spiritual history; and it was the moment chosen by a Teacher as that in which he should be born a Jew. The story in the Gospels cannot, I suppose, be taken as au pied de lettre historical; but no doubt it gives a general picture which is true enough.
