"I stopped and spoke to Betsy Butterfly this very morning. And I stepped up close to her, because I wanted to see if she really does paint her wings, as my friend Miss Moth, here, suspects," Mrs. Ladybug explained to Jennie Junebug. "And what do you think? I saw that Betsy Butterfly was completely covered with dust, from head to foot!" Mehitable Moth looked rather uncomfortable.

She dropped upon the grass, where she clung to a blade and swayed up and down for a few moments, dizzy and trembling. And she was gasping so hard, in order to get her breath, that she couldn't speak. Watching her, Jennie Junebug shrieked with laughter. Then, seeing Freddie Firefly's light flashing in the meadow, Miss Junebug hurried away. "SUCH impudence!" Mrs.

So she sent Miss Moth over to the meadow, to find Freddie Firefly and ask him if he wouldn't come to the orchard because Mrs. Ladybug wanted to talk with him. He came. He came at once; for he saw Jennie Junebug looking for him. And he was only too glad to escape her attentions. He found her too rough to suit him. Mrs. Ladybug quickly explained her difficulty. "What shall I do?" she asked him.

Then she stole forth from her hiding place, showing a battered face to her friends. "Good-by, everybody!" she called. "I'm going to move. I'm going 'way down to the end of the valley to live.... I'm off already," she added, as she spread her wings. Nobody ever saw Jennie Junebug on Farmer Green's place again. And Mrs. Ladybug was more than satisfied.

So she poked Jennie Junebug several times. But Jennie Junebug only stirred slightly and murmured something in her sleep. And seeing that it was useless to try to awaken her Mrs. Ladybug set out for the meadow alone. The sun hung low in the west when Mrs. Ladybug found Betsy Butterfly among a clump of milk-weed blossoms. But Mrs. Ladybug did not care what time it was.

Flashing his light upon Jennie Junebug he saw that she was looking at him fondly. And that made him detest her more than ever. "You seem to be enjoying yourself," he said spitefully. "Yes, indeed!" the fat lady exclaimed. "I haven't had such sport for a whole week. One of your cousins flew with me one night. And we had a fine time.

"Have you a few minutes to spare? If you have, I'd like to talk with you." Jennie Junebug grinned broadly. "I can give you a few seconds of my valuable time," she replied. "I was just going over to the meadow, for Freddie Firefly will be there soon. He dances in the meadow every night. And I like to see his flickering light and watch him bounce when I hit him.

On the day or rather, on the night when he first met Jennie Junebug, Freddie Firefly was ill at ease. In fact it might be truthfully said that he was quite upset. One beautiful, warm, dark night early in the summer Freddie was hurrying to join a big family party which was already gathering in the hollow beyond the hill.

No doubt we'd be enjoying each other's company yet, if I hadn't had a bit of bad luck." "What was that?" Freddie Firefly asked her quickly. He thought that if he could only keep his dreadful companion TALKING, perhaps she would forget about FLYING and knocking him down. "What was your bad luck?" he repeated impatiently. Jennie Junebug paused and wiped her eyes.

"You're a newcomer in these parts, aren't you?" Freddie Firefly inquired. "I just arrived here this month," she informed him. "This is the month of June, you know. And I'm one of the well-known Junebug family. ... I already know who you are," she continued. "You've been pointed out to me. You are Freddie Firefly; and you can't deny it."
