On October 13, 1849, Mr. Charles C. Ingham sent him a long letter detailing the trials and triumphs of the institution, from which I shall quote a few sentences: "'Lang syne, when you fought the good fight for the cause of Art, your prospects in life were not brighter than they are now, and in bodily and mental vigor you are just the same, therefore do not, at this most critical moment, desert the cause.
Van Buren was premier, or Secretary of State, with John H. Eaton, a very ordinary man, Secretary of War; Branch, Secretary of the Navy, and Ingham, Secretary of the Treasury; with John M. Berrien, Attorney-General. Eaton was from Tennessee, and was an especial favorite of General Jackson.
We had applied to Judge Pynchon, then the probate judge at Springfield, to change the name of Dennis Shea to Frederic Ingham. We had explained to the Judge, what was the precise truth, that an eccentric gentleman wished to adopt Dennis under this new name into his family. It never occurred to him that Dennis might be more than fourteen years old.
Haliburton sings, or we sit on the stoup and hear the crickets sing; but when there is a new Trollope or Thackeray, alas, there will never be another new Thackeray! all else has always been set aside till we have read that aloud. When I began the last sentence of the last Thackeray that ever was written, Ingham jumped out of his seat, and cried,
For one Brother, John Toeltschig, Ingham had a special affection, and while he was on his visit to Herrnhut he begged that Toeltschig might be allowed to come with him to England. "B. Ingham," he wrote, "sends greeting, and bids grace and peace to the most Reverend Bishops, Lord Count Zinzendorf and David Nitschmann, and to the other esteemed Brethren in Christ.
I think Ingham says somewhere that it is the slight difference between the two stereoscopic pictures which gives to them, when one overlies the other, their relief and distinctness. If he does not say it, I will say it for him now.
I spoke to a friend of his about it once; and I think Ingham took it kindly," etc., etc. This voting power of Dennis was particularly valuable at the quarterly meetings of the Proprietors of the Naguadavick Ferry. My wife inherited from her father some shares in that enterprise, which is not yet fully developed, though it doubtless will become a very valuable property.
But tell me, tell me something, tell me everything, Danforth, before I die! "Ingham, I swear to you that I felt like a monster that I had not told him everything before.
For all she knew or all she wanted to know it might refer to Agatha's self. "I am afraid I shall lose her, you know horribly afraid," whispered Mrs. Ingham-Baker, knowing the value of competition in all things. Fitz looked genuinely sympathetic, and glanced at Agatha again, wondering what disease had marked her for its own. Mrs. Ingham- Baker thought fit to explain indirectly, as was her wont.
But, of course, she sternly refused. At midnight they came home delighted, Polly, as I said, wild to tell me the story of victory; only both the pretty Walton girls said, "Cousin Frederic, you did not come near me all the evening." We always called him Dennis at home, for convenience, though his real name was Frederic Ingham, as I have explained.
