Splendid fellow, Hackett, and I couldn't ask a better; and the work is great. But there comes an hour now and then when there seems more beauty in one small letter postmarked "home" than in all the gorgeous sunsets of this wonderful country. "May I write often and at length? I can think of no happier way to spend the hour before we turn in than in writing to you.

Rosenzweig was convicted of manslaughter while treating a woman for abortion, and was sentenced to state prison for seven years a sentence so obviously out of proportion to the enormity of the crime that a howl of public indignation went up to the skies. However, Recorder Hackett had awarded the utmost penalty of the then existing law, and Rosenzweig was sent to Sing Sing.

"It's eight hundred for you, Hackett, an' always a good job with me as long as I hire men," persisted Colonel Ward. At last Hackett got up and struck his elbows against his sides. "I'll do it!" he grunted. Parker's first alarmed awakening was with a cloth about his neck, choking him so that his cry of fright rattled in his throat.

Of course the jury then acquitted him. But it was a merciful providence that Mrs. H.'s people had been afflicted as shown, else Hackett would certainly have been hanged. However, it is not possible to recount all the marvelous cases of insanity that have come under the public notice in the last thirty or forty years. There was the Durgin case in New Jersey three years ago.

There was no lowering of the standards in the succeeding years, which saw the development of players like Hackett, Prince, Farnsworth and Davis. Coming now to more recent times, the coaching was turned over to H. M. Nelly, assisted by Joseph W. Beacham, fresh from chasing the little brown brother in the Philippines.

The Park held a large part in my boyhood's and young manhood's life. Here I heard the English actor, Anderson, in "Charles de Moor," and in the fine part of "Gisippus." Here I heard Fanny Kemble, Charlotte Cushman, the Seguins, Daddy Rice, Hackett as Falstaff, Nimrod Wildfire, Rip Van Winkle, and in his Yankee characters.

Two minutes later, and still splashing through water that came almost up to their hips, those who bore the injured man arrived close to the boats. "Why, it's Professor Hackett who's being carried!" exclaimed Jack. The small man on the litter, who looked very white, lifted his head with an effort, and tried to wave his hand. "Yes, that's who it is; and you're Jack Stormways; aren't you? Oh!

Captain Hackett caught hold of him, but the undertow swept them both away, locked in each other's arms. The brave woman plunged after them, and, with the strength of a giantess, bore them, clinging to each other, to the shore, and up to her fire. The five sailors followed in succession, and were all rescued in the same way.

There was nothing in this to object to, and Miss Hackett would not be persuaded not to see her to the door of Miss Vincent's lodgings, though lengthening her own walk -alone, a thing more terrible to her old-fashioned mind than to that of her companion. Dolores wrote her telegram "Dolores Mohun, Valentia, Silverton, to Gerald Underwood, Trinity College, Oxford. Ludmilla here. Circus. Come."

And so the bugler was told to sound "taps" to signify that it was time they crawled under their blankets. A few chose to sleep aboard the motor boats, which, of course, relieved the tents from overcrowding. Professor Hackett and his assistants had been lodged in one of the tents, which fact had something to do with the lack of room. But presently all these things had been arranged.
