The so-called "jungle-cock" in a "Jock Scott" fly is furnished by a bird found, I believe, only round Madras. An animal peculiar to this part of Assam is the pigmy hob, the smallest of the swine family. These little beasts, no larger than guinea-pigs, go about in droves of about fifty, and move through the grass with such incredible rapidity that the eye is unable to follow them.
"It's that worritting oven, ma'am" turning to nurse; "I assure you we do have a time with it sometimes." The tea began merrily, and just in the middle of it the door opened, and James Seton's sunburnt face looked in. He carried a basket which Bobbie pounced upon eagerly, for he knew it contained the long-expected guinea-pigs.
Brown-Sequard gives the following summary of his observations on guinea-pigs, and this summary is so important that I will quote the whole: "'1st. Appearance of epilepsy in animals born of parents having been rendered epileptic by an injury to the spinal cord. "'2nd. Appearance of epilepsy also in animals born of parents having been rendered epileptic by the section of the sciatic nerve. "'3rd.
If your father was a black rabbit" he raised the forefinger of his left "and your mother was a white rabbit, then your male children would be" he raised all the other fingers and paused as though taken aback by the size of the family "would be blue guinea-pigs, with a tendency to club-foot and astigmatism, but your female children might only be rather clumsy tangoists with a weakness for cutting their poor relations.
"And how are the guinea-pigs?" asked Charles, putting down his cup. "Come and see them," whispered Molly, insinuating her small hand delightedly into his big one; and they went off together, each happy in the society of the other.
Nor do I. But what happened was that the guinea-pigs and solicitors and nobodies, the party hacks who form the bulk of London's misrepresentation in the House of Commons, stampeded in terror against a proposal that threatened to wipe them out and replace them by known and responsible men. London, alas! does not seem to care how its members are elected.
How were the guinea-pigs, the ducks, the vegetables, the caged fox, the "boys" generally, Roosy's ear, Consuelo Vorse's lame foot? Did Mrs. Tolley know that she had made a deep impression on the old fellow who drove the stage? "Oh, look at her blush, Min! Well, really!"
She ran out of the house as quick as she could, and found quite a crowd of little animals waiting outside guinea-pigs, white mice, squirrels, and "Bill" a little green lizard, that was being supported in the arms of one of the guinea-pigs, while another was giving it something out of a bottle.
The goose. The peacock. The guinea fowl. Exceptional causes of variation under domestication. Alleged tendency to reversion. Instances. Sterility of hybrids. Prepotency of pollen of same species, but of different race. Mortality in young gallinaceous hybrids. A bar to intermixture exists somewhere. Guinea-pigs. Summary and conclusion.
On enquiring after that commander's female passengers, he heard a pretty long catalogue of names, in which that he was so much interested in did not occur. On closer enquiry, Capstern recollected that Menie Gray, a young Scotchwoman, had come out under charge of Mrs. Duffer, the master's wife. "A good decent girl," Capstern said, "and kept the mates and guinea-pigs at a respectable distance.
