I can't say I was crazy over 'em. She's a little mouse of a woman, big eyed and quiet, but Vee seems to like her. Pyne, he's a tall, slim gink with stooped shoulders and so short sighted that he has to wear extra thick eyeglasses. He'd come over to work for some book publishin' house but it seems he wrote things himself.
The "Gallant kid" and Brennan, they were "regular guys," all right. Brennan was a "wisecracker," all right, all right. Some day he'd tell them why he was helping them. They thought he was doing it for the money they gave him. He wouldn't "double-cross" the "Gink" or anyone else for money, see? What kind of a "bird" did they take him for, anyway?
"There is one thing upon which the reporters are speculating," he said. "What's that?" asked Gibson. "They are wondering when you will launch your attack in a new direction." "How?" "By hitting at 'Gink' Cummings." As John mentioned the "Gink's" name he watched Gibson's face closely to discover the effect it had upon the commissioner.
And I happen to know there's an awfully nice boy over in New York crazy to marry her. And I'm certain this gink is giving her a raw deal. He tried to get hold of me about a week ago, but I turned him down hard; and I suppose he thinks Babe is easier. And it's no good talking to her; she thinks he's wonderful. That's another kick I have against the show business.
There was not a robbery, holdup or ordinary theft reported to the police. The same order that prevailed when the "Gink" first decreed a "lay-off" prevailed and Gibson issued a triumphant statement to the reporters for the first editions in the morning. "It demonstrates what little fear bandits and crooks have for the police under Chief Sweeney," a part of the statement read.
What about his row the other night? I thought that girl was sure." "Well, Mr. Clemm, ye see, we had it fixed all right, an' some foxy gink blows in wid a taxi an' lifts de dame right from outen Shepard's mit! De slickest getaway I ever seen. I don't know wot 'is game is, but he sure made some getaway, an' we never even got a smell at 'im." "Who was with you on the deal? Who did the come-on?"
"That's the first gink we've met in this land who didn't claim to be something better than he looked!" Will whispered. "Hopeless, I suppose!" Fred answered. "Never mind. I like the man." It was evident that Monty liked him, too, for all his schooled reserve.
"Them camera supports is named for it, you know. But of course this gay gink of a Sandy had to come buttin' in. Too bad the Honorable Bertie had partook so free. He'd have looked the part all right when it come to rescuin' beauty in distress. But Fortune bein' a lady and naturally capricious, she hands the stunt over to old Sobersides here." Just then old Sobersides cut across the flow of Mr.
'Aw, it's the young girl you've dragged into it, Billy! "'It's a confidential matter, and no names were mentioned, says Mr. Van. "'Don't quibble, old chap! says the English gink. 'The name's nothing. And as for its being confidential Ferguson is sure to tell that aw French puppy he's so thick with, and the viscawnt'll be aw tea-tabling it about by five o'clock!
"Right here, then," Will explained, "is where you get your little Sherlock Holmes lesson! This is a new saw, as you all see. It probably never was used before. Now the man who did the cutting bought this at some nearby store. Don't you see what it means?" "That's a fact!" cried Tommy. "We can find out who bought the saw, and so discover the gink who tried to commit murder by sawing the ladders."
