My own frame of mind was one of horrible doubt and indecision. I knew not what to do for the best; and Gatton had begun to pace up and down like a caged wild beast. Therefore: "Fill your pipe," I said wearily. "A lot may depend upon our next move. To make a false one would perhaps be fatal."

At last the stranger halted his horse outside the "Five Angels" at Gatton. "It is a good inn, and I know the ale of old," said he. "When I had finished that 'Dream of Piers the Plowman' from which I have recited to you, the last verses were thus: "'Now have I brought my little booke to an ende God's blessing be on him who a drinke will me sende' "I pray you come in with me and share it."

"Yes," said Gatton, looking keenly about him, "but according to report if you will step upstairs you will get a surprise." "What do you mean?" "Well, suppose we go and see." Gatton led the way and I followed up the stairs as far as the first landing. Here I paused in amazement. For at this point all attempts at furnishing ceased. The landing was quite bare and so were the stairs above it!

Unaware that Inspector Gatton was watching me unaware that in my absence he had actually detected the presence of the gun upon the tower I played my last card ... and lost. Cassim it was who detected the fact that police were watching the Bell House! Cassim had failed me once. I instructed him a second time. I near the end of my statement.

Entering the Red House, Gatton and I proceeded first to that incredible oasis in the desert of empty rooms and my companion made a detailed examination of everything in the place, even sounding the walls, examining the fittings of the door, and finally proceeding through the hall in the direction of the south wing of the house that nearest to the garage.

"Some one was here last night," declared Gatton suddenly, as we turned to leave the deserted room, "after you and Bolton had gone. Everything incriminating the assassin has been removed.

"What you may term the hocus-pocus side of the case," he replied, "turns on matters Egyptian, doesn't it? Very well. Who else, that we know about, is associated, or ever has been associated with Egypt?" "But the woman?" "Ah!" said Gatton. "Now you are getting down to the depths.

Gatton replaced the sodden garments one by one in the bag, frowning as he did so, and: "It occurred to me this morning," he replied, "that there is one inquiry which in justice to the suspected man and in order to round off the investigation, should be instituted.

"On the stairs," replied Gatton; "but you must extinguish it when we enter the room above." With that he thrust open the door of my bedroom, ran in and ran out again, banging the door behind him as though pursued by devils! Then the pair of us were racing up the stairs madly for the room above, I vaguely wondering if my companion had taken leave of his senses.

As we approached the porch I saw that the windows of the rooms immediately left and right of it had been stripped of the agent's bills, for I could see where fragments of paper still adhered to the glass. There were no bills in the porch either; but when Gatton opened the front door I uttered an exclamation of surprise. We stood in a small lounge-hall.
