More fiercely it blew through the hours of darkness. It was a night of terror, for they dared not go to sleep, not knowing at what moment the ship might turn turtle, or even rend apart, and plunge with them into the depths of the sea. So they sat up, occasionally attending to the machinery, and noting the various gages. Mr.
Maraschino cherries may be used in place of almonds, or the base of the cake may be garnished with preserved green walnuts or green gages, or the top and sides may be garnished with rosettes of whipped cream. This will serve twelve persons. Make a quart of Caramel Ice Cream, pack, and stand it aside for two hours.
Skim very carefully, boiling till no more rises, and it is ready for use. Peaches, pears, green gages, cherries, and crab-apples are all preserved alike. Peel, stone, and halve peaches, and boil only a few pieces at a time till clear. Peel, core, and halve pears. Prick plums and gages several times. Core crab-apples, and cut half the stem from cherries. Cook till tender.
"You will observe," said Parker, blandly, "that there is some twenty inches difference between the gage of the wheels and the gage " "I don't care that" and Colonel Ward snapped the great whip "for your gages and your gouges! Take that engine off this ro'd." "I don't care to discuss the matter," returned Parker, quietly. "I am busy about my own affairs too busy to quarrel."
There were numerous gages to tell the depth to which the ship had sunk, the steam pressure, density of the water, and other necessary details. There were dynamos to make light, motors to run the pumps, and a great storage battery, so that in case of a breakdown to the turbine engine the craft could be run entirely by electricity for a time.
'I gave her to understand we were to have something good: blue gages from the south wall, cream to a reckless extent. 'Strawberry jam and pound-cake, suggested Eva. 'If you go on like that you'll make me distracted with hunger, said Blanche, a young person who at the seaside wanted twopence to buy buns directly after she had swallowed her dinner.
On condensing full load it is probable that A, B, and C will all register pressures above the atmosphere, while gages D, E, F, and G will register pressures below the atmosphere, being for this purpose vacuum gages. On the other hand, with a varying load, and consequently varying initial pressures, one or two of the gages may register pressure at one moment and vacuum at another.
Either method is safe if practiced by a skilful engineer. In measuring the clearance by the first method, the gage should be used with care, as it is possible by using too much pressure to swing the buckets and get readings which could be misleading. To an inexperienced man the taper gages would seem preferable.
The quicker deterioration of such gage tubes, when the gage is registering quickly changing pressures, can therefore readily be conceived, and for this reason alone it is desirable to have all gages, whatever the conditions under which they work, carefully tested and adjusted at short intervals.
No one who ever saw that father with that daughter could doubt that he loved her intensely. And this intensity gages for me the strength of what else was in him. Mrs. Pethel's love, though less explicit, was not less evidently profound. But the maternal instinct is less attractive to an onlooker, because he takes it more for granted than the paternal. What endeared poor Mrs.
