They were love- gages of her own sweet self; for, was she not my rose, my violet, that budded and blossomed in purple and pink alone for me the idol of my heart, my fancy's queen? With all these fond imaginings, however, I did not see much of her. I had very few opportunities for unfettered intercourse.
These pleasing and agreeable gages d’amitie originated with the French jewellers, and were soon made to spell proper names. Where precious stones could not be obtained with the necessary initial, mineral stones, such as lapis-lazuli, and verde antique, were pressed into the service. These rings are now occasionally made.
Then boil them again in the same syrup another quarter of an hour. Afterwards, spread them out to cool, put them into glass jars, and pour the syrup over them. Peaches may be preserved in the same manner. Also large plums or green gages; but to the plums you must allow additional sugar. The best peaches for drying are juicy free-stones. They must be quite ripe.
C'est bien payer un fou; jamais bouffon de grand seigneur n'eut de pareils gages. He declares that 'la cervelle du poète est aussi légère que le style de ses ouvrages, and remarks sarcastically that he is indeed a man extraordinaire en tout. Yet, while his opinion of Voltaire's character was rapidly growing more and more severe, his admiration of his talents remained undiminished.
With regard to these, it will be desirable to place a steam gage in the pipe, immediately before the main stop-valve, and another immediately after it. Any fall of pressure between the two sides of the valve can thus be detected. The two gages E and F on either side of the main stop-valve A are also shown.
They should be warm all the time, but must not boil. When they are a fine green, take them carefully out, spread them on a hair sieve to drain, and make a syrup of the sugar, allowing a half pint of water to each pound and a half of sugar. When it has boiled and been skimmed, put in the green gages and boil them gently for a quarter of an hour. Then take them out and spread them to cool.
"My name is Sancio Pico," he said; "I am a Castilian, and the 'proveditore' of the army of H. C. M., which is commanded by Count de Gages under the orders of the generalissimo, the Duke of Modem." My excellent appetite astonished him, and he enquired whether I had dined. "No," said I; and I saw his countenance assume an air of satisfaction.
Pressure gages were connected to the suction, discharge, and condenser inlet, as shown at G, G' and G'' respectively. When No. 1 unit was operating alone the gage G showed practically zero, indicating no vacuum in the suction pipe.

Up to the governing-valve inlet no throttling of the steam ought to take place under normal conditions, i.e., with all valves open, and consequently any fall in pressure between the steam inlet and this point must be the result of internal wire-drawing. By placing the gages as shown, the extent to which this wire-drawing affects the pressures obtainable can be discovered.
