Jane managed to hide her impatience, but she was disappointed. She had expected to draw out the confidence of Sally and Bobbie, realizing she might help them if she but understood the mysterious predicament. But there was no chance of further pressing that point, so she turned and fled, to leave the freshies to their own particular little affairs.
They were full-fledged juniors, and they had to give up old Number 30, West Side, which they both loved, to incoming freshies. They drew Number 83 a lovely room, much larger than their old one and more sumptuously furnished. It had a double door, too, and the walls were almost sound-proof. "What a lovely room to study in!" cried Nancy.
So she was able to send home better reports for her first half-year's work than she had had before. Nancy took to study naturally; it was a "grind" for Jennie, and she was frank to admit it. Nancy stuck to her books just as closely after Thanksgiving as she had before; but as a sophomore she had more freedom than was usually granted to the freshies.
"Never knew 'em to come before. I won't even get a chance to talk to Merriwell." "Better keep away from him this afternoon," cautioned Hartwick. "He can't escape you, and there is plenty of time." "That's so," agreed Bruce. "But I hate to think how he is crowing to himself over the way the freshies got into the park. I'd like to take the starch out of him at once."
Their appointment brought elation to their team mates and Leslie Cairns. "Ramsey will soon put them in good trim," she exulted. "Don't wait for those sulky freshies to challenge you. After the girls have had a week's practice, challenge the sophs and set the date two weeks away. That will give Dulcie and Nell plenty of time to learn the ropes."
"Not until our duties are done," answered the mask. "You are freshies, nice, new, tender little freshies. We are here to initiate you into the mysteries of the Sacred Order of Hullabalooloo. Stand up!" Neither moved; they were already standing, West puzzled and angry, Joel wondering and amused. "Well, sit down, then," commanded the voice.
Those in the front line leaned back at a slant, and those behind pushed. At the same time the sophomores moved toward the freshmen, and then there were shouts, taunts and jeers. Each side gave its own cheer. "This is the last of the freshmen!" cried the sophomores. "We'll wipe them off the earth. Good-by, freshies!" "'Umpty-seven will never be heard of again," returned the freshmen.
Directly college routine was resumed after that holiday the freshmen challenged the sophomores to meet them on the eighth of December. The sophs graciously accepted the challenge and beat the freshies after one of the hardest fought contests that had ever taken place at Hamilton.
If Leslie can find ways to get even with them, I am willing to do as she says, simply to see those hateful girls defeated in whatever they set out to do." "That is the proper spirit," approved Leslie. "Believe me, I know what I am saying when I tell you that we must fight those girls and put them in the background where they belong. The way to begin this year is to win over the freshies.
As both groups of girls were bent on being friendly, a buzz of conversation soon arose. Under cover of it Robin said to Marjorie: "What do you think about the Sans' new stunt? You know just why they are doing it and so do all of us who fought out that basket-ball affair with them last year. Their motive isn't a worthy one. Still we really can't tell the freshies that. Phil understands matters.
