Another kind of serpent found here, a species of Helicops, was amphibiousin its habits. I saw several of this in wet weather on the beach, which, on being approached, always made straightway for the water, where they swamwith much grace and dexterity. Florinda one day caught a Helicops while angling for fish, it having swallowed the fishhook with the bait.

"And some cognac for the coffee. And some cigarettes. Do you think of anything more, Splutter?" As they came from the shop of the illustrious purveyors of potato salad in Second Avenue, Florinda cried anxiously, "Here, Billie, you let me carry that!" "What infernal nonsense!" said Hawker, flushing. "Certainly not!" "Well," protested Florinda, "it might soil your gloves somehow."

Florinda was naturally of a devotional character; and this feeling had grown and strengthened by her companionship with the late duchess, who was noted for her piety and goodness-and in fact came to her death, as is well known, by too much rigor imposed upon herself in devotional penance!

You are playing me false, Florinda. You have a lover, and a favored one." "No, no!" cried the agonized girl. "It is nothing, believe me trust not appearances. I will explain all." But at this moment the distant clang of trumpets and kettledrums was heard, announcing the governor's return. "I must begone!" cried Florinda; "believe me, I am faithful;" and with these words she fled into the house.

Others, however, have pointed out the discrepancy between the generally acknowledged purity of character of Florinda and the meaning of La Cava, and it is their opinion that Count Julian's daughter is merely legendary, and that La Cava refers in some allegorical way to the dissolute and voluptuous life which Rodrigo had been leading and which was in itself a good and sufficient reason for all the misfortunes which were to follow.

"They touch an air of Petrarch's sonatas! How indiscreet, and yet how noble!" "More noble than wise," said the Donna Florinda, who entered the balcony and looked intently on the water beneath. "Here are musicians in the color of a noble in one gondola," she continued, "and a single cavalier in another." "Hath he no servitor? Doth he ply the oar himself?"

"You know, Florinda," said Carlton, blushing in spite of himself, "I told you of my misfortune in losing my friend and patron." "True, but what has that to do with thy coat, Carlton?" asked the lady, who, never having known the want of money, could not realize the effect of such a condition. And then, too, she did not exactly understand the dependency of Carlton upon his patron.

But this Florinda is such a sturdy young soul! The world is against her, but, bless your heart, she is equal to the battle. She is strong in the manner of a little child. Why, you don't know her. She " "I know her very well." "Well, perhaps you do, but for my part I think you don't appreciate her formidable character and stunning figure stunning!"

As she said this, her eyes were instinctively turned to the window of her room, and Cesareo's followed the same direction. The shadow of Landon's figure, as it passed between the lamp and the window, was seen defined distinctly on the curtain. "By Heaven!" cried Cesareo, "there is a man in your bed chamber!" "My father!" said Florinda. "You told me in your last breath that he had not returned.

To be sure it is not a Sunday-school exclusively, and is not so designated, but that exemplary lady always attends there for an hour before church, and hears the children say their catechism, and sees that they are clean and tidy for church, with their hands washed and their shoes tied; and Grisel and Florinda, her daughters, carry thither a basket of large buns, baked on the Saturday afternoon, and distribute them to all the children not especially under disgrace, which buns are carried home after church with considerable content, and eaten hot at tea, being then split and toasted.
