The Act of 1877 opened the Headships of the Colleges, and put an end to prize Fellowships for life. The Provost of Oriel, then Vice- Chancellor, was a layman. Bishop Thomas of Winchester died in 1781, in his 85th year, and is buried in his cathedral. He was translated to London in 1764, and died in 1777. He is buried at Hatfield, where he had been rector. His father was a stable-master in London. Proceeding from Westminster School to Trinity College, Cambridge, he obtained a Fellowship there.
