I have dug and helped to dig dug-outs. I have lain full length in the dry, dead grass "under the wide and starry sky." I have crept behind a ledge of rock, and gone to sleep with the ants crawling over me. I have slept with a pair of boots for a pillow. I have lived and snoozed in the dried-up bed of a mountain torrent for weeks. A ground-sheet tied to a bough has been my bedroom.
"How should you?" he said, in a changed tone. "We Americans set up monuments to our destroyers, not to our preservers, of life. Nobody knows about Walter Reed and James Carroll and Jesse Lazear not even the American Government, which they officially served except a few doctors and dried-up entomologists like myself. Forgive me. I didn't mean to deliver a lecture."
King, however, had left La Praya thirty-six hours previously, and the Astrolabe therefore resumed her voyage the next day, i.e. on the 30th June. On the last day of July the rocks of Martin-Vaz and Trinity Island were sighted, and the latter appearing perfectly barren, a little dried-up grass and a few groups of stunted trees, dotted about amongst the rocks, being the only signs of vegetation.
Here and there over the hot, dusty plain we saw shacks and makeshift houses surrounded by patches of corn or flax or dried-up garden. Why were the houses so scattered, looking as though they had been thrown down at random? "They had to be set on the claims," our locator said dryly.
If, instead of being a young innocent girl, you were an ancient, shrivelled-up, worldly-minded woman, with a dried-up puff-ball full of blue dust for a heart, and a scheming brain manufactured by Maskelyne and Cook; and if you had Captain Horton for a son, and had singled me out for his victim, you could not have done more to put me in his power."
The spread perception of the Forest was focused on herself, and no mere shutting of the eyes could hide its scattered yet concentrated stare the all-inclusive vision of great woods. There was no wind, yet here and there a single leaf hanging by its dried-up stalk shook all alone with great rapidity rattling. It was the sentry drawing attention to her presence.
Passing as we did from a dried-up district into one covered with verdure, feelings were awakened akin to those with which in the temperate zone we welcome the spring after a long winter. As we rode on, the grass increased; there were swampy places in the hollows, and now and then very muddy spots on the road.
Some wore, on their blackened and dried-up bodies, shapeless rags; others had for their only clothes, bundles of reeds held together by withies. Many of them were naked, but God had covered them with a fell of hair as thick as a sheep's fleece.
When he had gone, Proserpina could not help coming close to the table and looking at the dried-up pomegranate with eagerness. To tell the truth, when she saw something that really suited her taste, she felt all her six months' hunger come back at once. To be sure it was a very poor-looking pomegranate, with no more juice in it than in an oyster-shell.
He is the wiriest athlete I know extraordinary physical strength for his size and one of the cleverest rascals out as a politician. I am a neighbour of his in the country. His property joins mine. I knew his father a little, dried-up old chap of the old school very elegant manners and very obstinate worried to death by his wife oh, my goodness! such a woman!"
