In their vainglorious attempt to pose as accurate and, thus, "respectable", scientists, economists refused to admit that capitalism is not merely a compendium of algorithms and formulas but mainly a state of mind. It is an all-encompassing, holistic, worldview, a set of values, a code of conduct, a list of goals, aspirations, fantasies and preferences and a catalog of moral do's and don'ts.

Of course, there are many other "don'ts" that will suggest themselves to the sensible boy; among them, "Don't fail to keep your boat pumped out or bailed," and "don't forget to carry an anchor of some sort," and not the least important," don't leave your eatables and drinkables ashore." There is no small boat so popular or so generally useful as the American catboat.

If they'd only tell us part of the time things to "do," maybe we wouldn't have so much time to do the "don'ts." Well, what was I saying? Oh, I know about asking questions. As I said, there isn't anybody like Nurse Sarah here. I can't understand Olga, and Theresa, the other maid, is just about as bad. Aunt Hattie's lovely, but I can't ask questions of her. She isn't the kind.

His head, like a book of etiquette, is full of "Don'ts," diplomatic "Don'ts," all deduced from the experience of Wilson. The former President met Europe face to face. Mr. Hughes thanks his stars for the breadth of the Atlantic. The former President put his League of Nations first on his program. Mr. Hughes puts his League of Nations last, to be set up after every other question is settled.

You see, I have heard things about you. Like me, you were tricked into this game. Tell me, is it not true that you saw Hardy tonight." "You hear a lot, don't you?" Ross was noncommittal. "I hear, I see, I learn more than these big mouths, like the major with all his do's and don'ts. That I can tell you! You saw Hardy. Do you want to be a Hardy?" "Is there any danger of that?" "Danger!"

A garden, we say, should never compel us to go back the way we came; but in truth a garden should never compel us to do anything. Its don'ts should be laid solely on itself. Those applicable to its master, mistress, or guests should all be impossibilities, not requests. "Private grounds, no crossing" take that away, please, wherever you can, and plant your margins so that there can be no crossing.

"Gee, but there are things to remember!" ejaculated Dick. "Not so many, really, if you use ordinary brains," Bob returned. "You just have to think, that is all. A few big principles hold throughout. The other don'ts are simply to make your own work and the other fellow's smoother; prevent mistakes; do away with as much interference as possible; and protect your outfit.

There are many more "Don'ts" for the salesman but I shall leave you to figure out the rest of them for yourself but just one more: DON'T be ashamed that you are a salesman! Salesmanship is just as much a profession as law, medicine, or anything else, and salesmanship also has its reward.

"These are my don'ts," Polly confided, as she pointed enthusiastically to worn pages of finely written notes. "You'se WHAT, chile?" "The things I mustn't do or say." "An' you'se been losin' yoah beauty sleep for dem tings?" Mandy looked incredulous. "I don't want Mr. John to feel ashamed of me," she said with growing pride. "Well, you'd catch Mandy a-settin' up for " "Oh, oh!

How much of life they can miss who can buy whatever they want whenever they want it! But I tell first of my own garden also because I believe it summarizes to the eye a number of primary book-rules, authoritative "don'ts," by the observance of which a multitude of amateur gardeners may get better results than it yet shows.
