At the annual meeting of their war council, October 23, 1918, the chairman, Henry P. Davison, submitted a report that is literally astonishing, because the facts related had developed without, publicity and were quite unknown to the people of the country at large. Here are a few of them, taken from Mr. Davison's official statement: NEARLY 28,000,000 WORKERS
Then she heard the purring of an automobile behind her the first vehicle that she had seen since leaving town. It was the big gray car that had been standing before Doctor Davison's house when she had passed, and Ruth would have known the girl who sat at the steering wheel and was driving the car alone, even had Reno, the big mastiff, not sat in great dignity on the seat beside her.
Several examples appeared in Francis Davison's famous miscellany known as the Poetical Rhapsody, the first edition of which, though it only appeared in 1602, contained the gleanings of the entire sixteenth century. Of these imitations, four in number, the first, the work of the editor himself, is a very poor production.
A few minutes afterwards, Miss B. and Miss Z. returned from a drive with Plantagenet Gaunt in their one-horse fly, and being informed of Davison's arrival, and that he was closeted with Miss Raby in the little school-room, of course made for that apartment at once. I was coming into it from the other door. I wanted to know whether she had drunk the water. This is what both parties saw.
When everything was just where it should be, she returned to the fire and sank into a chair thoughtfully. "How I should like some rides," she said; "but I suppose I can't have them, not unless Maxwell Davison's still in Oxford." Ian's face clouded. How could any being believe in Lord Loughborough's telling such a tale? Mrs. K. may have, from ignorance, supposed that a prisoner on trial for his life can be examined by the prosecutor's counsel; but can anyone suppose that such a story as Davison's murder of his old companion could have happened, and no one even heard of it, or of his being hanged, as he must have been, on his own confession?
In order to evade this conclusion, nothing is left but to deny that Isaiah, or any person of his age, wrote the book ascribed to him. The age of the Cyrus prophecies is the great object of attack by Eichhorn and his compilers; and I dare not say, that in a controversy with these men Davison's arguments would appear sufficient. But this was not the intended subject of these Discourses. Disc.
Even Davison's, the best and most fashionable, has but an ordinary cuisine. Rooms are quite dear particularly during our sojourn, when the Diet was in session and the city crowded with country visitors and the inclusive expenses of living were equal to Berlin and greater than in Paris.
Davison's stress on the word 'covet', in the tenth commandment, is, I think, beyond what so ancient a Code warrants; and for the other instances, Michaelis would remind him that the Mosaic constitution was a strict theocracy, and that Jehovah, the God of all, was their 'king'. I do not know the particular mode in which Michaelis propounds and supports this position; but the position itself, as I have presented it to my own mind, seems to me among the strongest proofs of the divine origin of the Law, and an essential in the harmony of the total scheme of Revelation.
