An event of Christmas was the production of a family by Crean's rabbit. She gave birth to 17, it is said, and Crean has given away 22! I don't know what will become of the parent or family; at present they are warm and snug enough, tucked away in the fodder under the forecastle. Midnight. It was a desperate venture, but luckily successful. To-day Wilson, Oates, Cherry-Garrard, and Crean have gone to Hut Point with their ponies, Oates getting off with Christopher after some difficulty. In a minute or two we heard a voice, and behold! communication was established. I had quite a talk with Meares and afterwards with Oates.
Crean I perceive that my client, Dr. C. Waters, is now in court. In order to facilitate business, I shall offer no further objection; but, as a matter of fact, he was not summoned.
No wonder that the sturdy old selectman thought these to be "very distressed times."
