The farmhand, who would never think of wasting his money, wastes his energies by contracting big muscles, where a better economized system of movement would allow him to reach the same result through the contraction of smaller muscles, which involves much less energy and much less fatigue. The loss by wrong bending and wrong coördination of movement may be greater than by bad weather.

Contraction is not, however, the natural state of a muscle. In time it is tired, and begins to relax. Even the heart, the hardest-working muscle, has short periods of rest between its beats. Muscles are highly elastic as well as contractile. By this property muscle yields to a stretching force, and returns to its original length if the stretching has not been excessive.

In vain did I try to detect a smile upon their lips; sometimes by a spasmodic and involuntary contraction of the muscles they seemed to laugh, but they never smiled. Their costume consisted of a coarse jacket of black woollen cloth called in Scandinavian lands a 'vadmel, a hat with a very broad brim, trousers with a narrow edge of red, and a bit of leather rolled round the foot for shoes.

XIV. The efficient causes of motion, or new configuration, consist either of the principle of general gravitation, which actuates the sun and planets; or of the principle of particular gravitation, as in electricity, magnetism, heat; or of the principle of chemical affinity, as in combustion, fermentation, combination; or of the principle of organic life, as in the contraction of vegetable and animal fibres.

Bartholomew's, the whole building shook with the great pedal notes, but that does not altogether account for what she felt and enjoyed. The vibration of the air as the organ notes swelled made her sway in answer. Sometimes she puts her hand on a singer's throat to feel the muscular thrill and contraction, and from this she gets genuine pleasure. No one knows, however, just what her sensations are.

But all of these troubles weren't even annoyances beside what Keg Rearick had to endure. Keg was an affectionate contraction of his real nickname "Keghead." He had the worst case of "Pa" I ever heard of.

If disfigurement is likely to follow from cicatricial contraction for example, in a sinus over the lower jaw associated with a carious tooth the sinus should be excised and the raw surfaces approximated with stitches. The tuberculous sinus is described under Tuberculosis. A #fistula# is an abnormal canal passing from a mucous surface to the skin or to another mucous surface.

The contrast here, to give the thing significance, was between that swiftest, tiniest contraction of the brows at the sight of her mother's letters and the eager spring to them, the quick snatching up, and the impulsive pressing to her lips when first those letters began to come.

First, by muscular tension, muscular contraction, muscular effort the wrong way. Second, by vitalized energy, by expansion, and by added resonance of air in the inflated cavities the right way. Of course to produce expansion and inflation, true conditions of form and adjustment must prevail, through the movements given. Form has much to do with determining the quality and character of the tone.

Again, it is a fact not generally known that the heart receives no nourishment during the period of contraction, owing to the pressure upon the arteries which supply it with nutriment.
