I besought him not to do it I begged, I entreated, I pleaded. He said that nothing I could say would change him. I said that you would all stand by me in this, and he asked me what we five could do against them. He, called us five tottering females. Oh, it grew dreadful. I shrieked at him, finally. As he left, he said, 'Remember your first day in the Clubhouse, my dear!
The men retired to the forest as usual but, by an apparent inadvertence, they left the door of the Clubhouse open a crack. As usual the girls followed the men to the lake, but this time there was a different air about them; they seemed to bubble with excitement. The men crawled under the underbrush and waited.
While the women work at the washing tub to add to our scanty hoard, we happily meet at the poor man's club, where never a soul is bored. We recklessly squander our minted brawn, and the clubhouse owner thrives; and we'll homeward go at the break of dawn and joyously beat our wives.
Any sporting projectile sent into it might be counted most literally as a lost ball. But they often sauntered round it in their interludes of talking and smoking cigarettes, and one of them had just come down from the clubhouse to find another gazing somewhat moodily into the well.
It was difficult to state with certainty what bad deed she had ever done, or what good deed. She simply lived by her wits, and perhaps by some want of that article in her male friends. Her house was a sort of gentlemanly clubhouse, where the presence of two women offered a shade less restraint than if there had been men alone.
Then, following a brief pause, both started toward their cars. The next minute they were chugging away, in the night and the lights in the clubhouse began to go out. Two hours later a stealthy figure crept across the Thursdale lawn, lurking behind the rose beds and lilac bushes, finally worming its way to a dripping but secluded spot under the weather side of the house.
But I'll have to leave you after an hour." "Are you going to see Peachy?" Clara demanded shrilly. "No." Pete's tone was stern. "I'm going to the Clubhouse." "How has everything gone to-day, Billy?" Julia asked, as they sat looking out to sea. "Rather well," Billy answered. "We were all in a working mood and all in good spirits. We've done more to-day than we've done in any three days before.
A head protruded from a dark upper window. "Yes, you can, Simeon," growled a woman's guttural voice. "Wall I don't know " "Yes, you can." She turned to Orme. "He'll take ye fer five dollars cash. Ye can pay me." Orme turned to Bessie. "Have you any money?" he whispered. "Heavens! I left my hand-bag in my locker at the clubhouse. How stupid!" "Never mind."
An' Lucy Warden she done told me, this afternoon, 'bout how you-all was takin' care of Mr. Burns, an' how you just naturally wouldn't let him die. An' an' I kin see, now, what hit is that makes Auntie Sue and him an' you-all so different from that there clubhouse gang an' pap an' me. An' I ain't a-wantin' ter be like I been, no more, ever. I'd a heap rather jump inter the river an' drown myself.
"Go on go on!" "Then there was a man of London, who was only a waiter at White's clubhouse. He began playing first half-crown stakes, and then higher and higher, till he became very rich, got an appointment in India, and rose to be Governor of Madras. His daughter married a member of Parliament, and the Bishop of Carlisle stood godfather to one of the children." "Wonderfull wonderfull"
