Ashe started in amazement and alarm. The words of Mrs. Herman connecting the name of Mrs. Fenton with that of Candish flashed into his mind, and seemed to supply what Mrs. Wilson left unspoken.

She looked at him in evident surprise and disquiet. "I asked what you think of the marriage of the clergy," he went on, "because it seems to me right to tell you that Mr. Candish loves you." She flushed to her temples, starting impulsively in her seat. "Mr. Ashe," she said vehemently, "what right have you to talk to me of such subjects at all?"

Having taken in all necessaries that this place produced, Candish set sail for England on the 20th of June, standing N.W. by W. It is observable, that the wind at St Helena is generally off the shore.

"What right have you or I to ask that question?" he retorted sternly. "I do penance for loving her, and God is my witness how carefully I have hidden it. It is not for me to question her right to love if she please." Philip rose, and went to the other, holding out his hand. "Mr. Candish," said he earnestly, "you have taught me my lesson. I have been a weak fool, and worse.

It would be bliss to be alone with his dream. As he and Mrs. Herman were going home, Helen said: "I do wonder" "What do you wonder?" he asked. "Did I say that out loud?" she responded. "I didn't mean to. I was thinking that I couldn't help wondering whether Edith Fenton will ever marry Mr. Candish."

"It is the most provincial city in America, in the sense that nothing really exists for it outside of itself. If I think of New York for ten minutes I have no longer any faith in America." "Then I shouldn't think of it, Helen," put in Mrs. Fenton. "Then you wouldn't go with your husband if he went there to do this work, I suppose," Mr. Candish observed.

It is in lat. 30° N. being distant 110 leagues from Guam and about 60 leagues from Manilla, the chief of the Philippines. Samar is a woody island, and its inhabitants are mostly heathens. Candish spent eleven days in sailing from Guam to this place, having had some foul weather, and scarcely carrying any sail for two or three nights.

The 29th of May, Candish went to an island near Puna, into which the caçique had conveyed all the valuable furniture of his palace, with other things of value. These stores were all discovered, and plundered of every thing thought worth carrying on board the ships, and the rest destroyed. The church also of Puna, which stood near the palace, was burnt down, and its five bells carried to the ships.

These thorough-bred seamen went to other countries; and, as knowledge is a portable commodity, they made the best market they could of their nautical experience in Holland and elsewhere. Among these was one Mr Mellish, who had been a favourite of Sir Thomas Candish, and the companion of all his voyages.

They chatted upon indifferent subjects for a little while, and then Mr. Candish went to keep an appointment at the bedside of a sick parishioner; so that Helen and Edith were left alone. They sat together a little longer, and then Helen asked casually, "By the way, Edith, how long has Arthur been painting Ninitta?" "Painting Ninitta?" echoed Edith.
