The seasoned campers were happy and enjoyed the luxury. Some who for the first time reposed upon the breast of Mother Earth failed to find her charm. One father awoke in the morning, sat up promptly, pointed his hand dramatically to the zenith, and said, "Never again!" But he lived to revel in the open-air caravansary, and came home a tougher and a wiser man.

Of course matches were not a luxury at Sunrise Camp and in the making of their daily fires the campers were not superior to the using of them, but this lighting of their first real Council Fire was to be a truly important ceremony and greatly the members desired to return to the primitive method of fire-making.

Then it was suggested again to the tramp that he go back to the vicinity of the camp on Firefly Lake and make matters uncomfortable for the campers. "I'll do it, if you'll pay me what it is worth," said Kiddy Leech. "But I can't go back to-day. It's too cold and I ain't dressed warm enough. And I'll want some provisions." "I can get you some better clothing," said Carl Dudder.

It does not take long for seven practical campers to get their kit and canoes in shape to pitch canvas for the night, and just as the sun dropped behind a rim of dense fir forest, "the Saucy Seven," as the boys had christened themselves, lighted their first camp fire and hung their kettle for supper.

As a result the fire was in a short time burning freely, and diffusing a genial warmth around that proved very acceptable to the chilled campers. Even Will thawed out under its influence and ceased to grumble. "It's all right, too, fellows; not a drop got in tinder these waterproofs," he declared, as he eagerly examined his precious possession. So the morning found them.

The branches, outspread in flat plumes and, beautifully fronded, sweep gracefully downward and outward, except those near the top, which aspire; the lowest, especially in youth and middle age, droop to the ground, overlapping one another, shedding off rain and snow like shingles, and making fine tents for birds and campers.

The games and sports, in endless variety, which make merry the park, field and glen, were the subjects of some of the paintings. These were the titles of some of the larger wall paintings: "A restful day under the oak." "The campers at the midday meal." "An hour of idle reading." "Around the camp-fire at night." "At rest beside the bounding brook." "Along the beach at bathing time."

It is the headquarters of the campers who come for pleasure each year, and its store does a very large and thriving business. New cottages are being erected and it is destined ere long to be a stirring pleasure resort town, for, as the delights of Tahoe become more widely known, every available piece of land will increase in value and where there is now one summer home there will be a hundred.

They were ready for rain, but not for the flood that rushed over the face of the cliff, soaking everything in the lodge except the beds, which, being four inches off the ground, were safe; and lying on them the two campers waited patiently, or impatiently, while the weather raged for two drenching hours.

"We will end up by making it 'See See," declared Dorothy, "for it does seem one or other of us is constantly calling upon some one else to see something there is lots to see." A party of other campers came trooping along the shady roadway. Cologne knew them, and hailed them pleasantly. "They are our neighbors," she said, "and they have the nicest brothers!
