Our standing rigging was of wire, this being lighter, and offering less windage than hemp-rigging of the same strength; but, in order to counteract its rigidity and give play to the spars, we adopted the expedient of connecting the deadeyes to the chain-plates by a bolt and shackle arrangement, interposing a thick india-rubber washer between the shackle and the bolt-head.

I might tell you how I'm lost once, freightin' from Vegas into the Panhandle, an' am two days without water blazin' Jooly days so hot you couldn't touch tire, chain, or bolt-head without fryin' your fingers. An' how at the close of the second day when I hauls in at Cabra Springs, I lays down by that cold an' blessed fountain an' drinks till I aches.

He made a fine and picturesque thing of the march-out from the Audience, augmenting the glories of it to the last limit of the impossibilities; then he took from his finger and held up a brass nut from a bolt-head which the head ostler at the castle had given him that morning, and made his conclusion thus: "Then the King dismissed the Maid most graciously as indeed was her desert and, turning to me, said, 'Take this signet-ring, son of the Paladins, and command me with it in your day of need; and look you, said he, touching my temple, 'preserve this brain, France has use for it; and look well to its casket also, for I foresee that it will be hooped with a ducal coronet one day. I took the ring, and knelt and kissed his hand, saying, 'Sire, where glory calls, there will I be found; where danger and death are thickest, that is my native air; when France and the throne need help well, I say nothing, for I am not of the talking sort let my deeds speak for me, it is all I ask.

And next, as I got my hand on the bolt-head, I felt the weight of another on my shoulder, and a voice behind me said in English: "In the devil's name!" I gave the one frantic pull, the bolt slipped, and caught again. Then Colonel Clark's voice rang out in the night: "Open the gate! Open the gate in the name of Virginia and the Continental Congress!"

She clasped a huge, cold bolt-head and clung to it desperately, for the upheaval in her soul rivaled that which had just passed before her eyes. The bridge, the river, the valley itself were gyrating slowly, dizzily. "Eliza!" She did not answer. "Child!" O'Neil's voice was shaking. "Why did you come to me? Why did you do this mad thing?

And next, as I got my hand on the bolt-head, I felt the weight of another on my shoulder, and a voice behind me said in English: "In the devil's name!" I gave the one frantic pull, the bolt slipped, and caught again. Then Colonel Clark's voice rang out in the night: "Open the gate! Open the gate in the name of Virginia and the Continental Congress!"

One sharp twist and wrench with his steel lever, however, tore the bolt-head from its setting, and in another half-minute he was standing on the closed door above, shutting out the noxious smoke from the basement. Between him and the stairway stood still another fortified door, heavier than the others.

But it was the more difficult to dispute the accuracy of the witness, as, in order to produce real evidence in support of his verbal testimony, he drew from his pouch the very bolt-head, which, according to his story, had been miraculously extracted from the wound; and as the iron weighed a full ounce, it completely confirmed the tale, however marvellous.

A tell-tale mark on the surface of the fly-wheel showed friction against something, and we found that while the wheel ran freely if we were out of the machine, with the load in, and especially on up grades with the chain drawing the framework closer to the running gear, the rim of the wheel just grazed a bolt-head in a small brace underneath, thereby producing the peculiar grating noise we had heard and materially checking the motor.

And this Experiment may, for ought I know, sometimes succeed; for I remember, that having in a small Bolt-head purposely sublim'd some powder'd Orpiment, we could in the Lower part of the Sublimate discern here and there some Reddish Lines, though much of the Upper part of the Sublimate consisted of a matter, which was not alone purely Yellow, but transparent almost like a Powder.
