When at last the conference ended, and their unmated footsteps crossed the landing, a few sentences echoed from the stairway. "That is all," declared the voice, pleasantly. "The Chow Ceremonial says, 'That man is unwise who knowingly throws away precious things. And in the Analects we read, 'There is merit in dispatch." Heywood's reply was lost, except the words, "stupid people."

But such is fame, at least in America, where erudition is not appreciated as it is in "pagan" China. Spring and Autumn Annals. Great Learning. Confucian Analects. Doctrine of the Mean. Works of Mencius. At an assembly-room in New York I met a famous American political "boss." Many governors in China do not have the same power and influence.

Analects, VII, xvii. 2 Analects, VIII, viii, XVII, ix. Analects, XVII, x. From Confucius to rise of the Khin dynasty. Of the attention paid to the study of the Shih from the death of Confucius to the rise -of the Khin dynasty, we have abundant evidence in the writings of his the grandson Dze-sze, of Mencius, and of Hsuen Khing.

Where were the Allies in whom he trusted? How dared he pit K'ung Ch'iu of Lu against time and the world and me? And with it all there was the human man who suffered. I think you will love him the more for this, from the Analects: "The Minister said to Tse Lu, Tseng Hsi, Jan Yu, and Kung-hsi Hua as they sat beside him: 'I may be a day older than you are, but forget that.

Ah! how far nearer the truth to say that morality means all this! It should be borne in mind that the four "Shus," as these books are called, tell us much more about the actual teaching and history of Confucius. The first, the "Lun Yu," or "Analects," is the most important of these, the next in importance being the teaching of Mencius.

Brent asked, more to keep from laughing than from any particular interest in the mountaineer just then. "In the library, as usual," answered the Colonel, "digging out analects." Timmie, overhearing this, wheeled about. "Mah sakes alive," she cried, a look of horror coming into her face. "You never had nuthin' lak dat in yoh house while I 'uz tendin' to it, Marse John!

"Behold!" he said, when they were at a discreet distance aside, "your years are now thus and thus, but there are still empty chairs where there should be occupied cradles in your inner chamber, and the only upraised voice heard in this spacious residence is that of your esteemed father repeating the Analects.

See the remark of Confucius on Thai-po's conduct, in the Analects, VIII, i. 2 .The lines from six to ten speak of king Ki in his relation to his elder brother. He accepted Thai-po's act without -any failure of his own duty to him, and by his own improvement of it, made his brother more glorious through it. His feeling of brotherly duty was simply the natural instinct of his heart.

The writings of Confucius and Mencius formed the principal text-books for youths and the highest authority in discussion among the old. A mere acquaintance with the classics of these two sages was held, however, in no high esteem. A common proverb ridicules one who has only an intellectual knowledge of Confucius, as a man ever studious but ignorant of Analects.

What Confucius taught under the fifth relation is not universality, and, as compared to the teachings of Jesus, is moonlight, not sunlight. The doctrine of the sage is clearly expressed in the Analects, and amounts only to courtesy and propriety.
