Lady Adela's had been few, and already chosen, and Bertha's were manifestly only matters of personal belonging, and not up altogether to the amount named; so as to avoid stripping the place, which, at the best, was only splendid in utterly unaccustomed eyes.
There was something depressing in the stillness of the house. Mrs. Waltham had her volume of family prayers open before her; her handkerchief lay upon it. 'She is naturally a little a little fluttered, she said, speaking of Adela. 'I hoped you would look in. Try and make her laugh, my dear; that's all she wants. The girl tripped softly upstairs, and softly knocked at Adela's door.
It was a breach of implied contract, she thought, that Cornelia should, as she did only yesterday, tell her that she had seen Edward Buxley in the woods, and that she was of opinion that the air of the woods was bad for her. Not to see would have been the sisterly obligation, in Adela's idea especially when seeing embraced things that no loving sister should believe.
"Going to Lady Adela's on the 3d?" said the bilious-looking Quirk, in a gay manner. "I should want to be asked first," was Lionel's simple rejoinder. "Ah!" said the other, complacently, "I heard you had not been much there lately. A charming house most interesting quite delightful to see people of their station so eagerly devoted to the arts.
"The woman is in labour," said Harry in reply to Adela, forgetting, in the stern reality both for the poor woman and himself, that girls of Adela's age and social position are not accustomed to hear such facts so plainly expressed, from a man's lips. Adela, however, simply accepted the fact, and replied: "But you will be too late anyhow."
Something or other in it had touched her not only deeply, but nearly. Nothing was said about another meeting perhaps because, from Adela's illness, the order had been interrupted, and the present had required a special summons. The ladies had gone up stairs to put on their bonnets.
The man had gone away without waiting for an answer. The note ran thus: "Miss Benshaw presents her compliments to Mr. Cosway, and will be obliged if he can call on her at nine o'clock this evening, on business which concerns himself." This invitation was evidently the result of Adela's visit earlier in the day.
"I came down in the motor to get a short talk on business with Miss Dexter," he explained, "but I am sorry to disturb a more amusing conversation." Edmund, of course, after that left them alone, and walked off by himself. Molly looked all her astonishment at Adela's "Tim."
Adela's embrace grew closer; her face was hidden, and all at once she began to sob. 'Love me, mother! Love me, dear mother! Mrs. Waltham beamed with real tenderness. For half an hour they talked as mother and child alone can. Then Adela walked back to the Manor, still dreaming. She did not feel able to call and see Letty.
It was a cold, sad, dreary matter that offer of his; her melancholy, silent acquiescence, and that marriage in Hadley church, at which none were present but Adela and Arthur, and Miss Baker. It was Adela who arranged it, and the result has shown that she was right. They now live together very quietly, very soberly, but yet happily. They have not Adela's blessings.
