So Peets an' me proposes as a roole for this yere camp that two hurdy-gurdies be forbid to be carried on within five hundred feet of each other. As it looks like nobody objects, we concloods it's adopted. Nacherally, the last hurdy-gurdy up has to move, which disposes of this yere trouble.
Crisp nights faintly metallic like the scent of stars! Hurdy-gurdies romping tunefully on every street-corner! Even the Ash-Man flushing frankly pink across his dusty cheek-bones! Like two fairies who had sublet a giant's cave the White Linen Nurse and the Little Crippled Girl turned themselves loose upon the Senior Surgeon's gloomy old house.
All the larger structures were wide open, and from within could be heard the sounds of hurdy-gurdies, loud laughter and noisy talk. At one end of the street a group was organizing a horse race; and toward this Don Gaspar took his immediate departure. A smaller group surrounded two wrestlers. At one side a jumping match was going on.
Then in his mind's eye he saw himself rolling down the street, a girl on either arm, the gaslights dancing in his tipsy head. He would meet a shipmate and drop in somewhere for a drink; another shipmate and another drink; and then, the party growing as it went, a general adjournment to one of them hurdy-gurdies.
Listening again, the similitude that seemed appropriate at first was cast aside for another, and then another still. The hidden singers scattered all about their rushy island were small, fantastic, human minstrels, performing on a variety of instruments, some unknown, others recognizable bones and castanets, tiny hurdy-gurdies, piccolos, banjos, tabours, and Pandean pipes a strange medley!
"What man?" asked Leonard, snapping the lock. "Why, the man of the Helmet the Dying Gaul and my man I've been telling you about." Leonard looked at her, and for some reason his eyes flinched. "What difference would that make? He was German," was all he said. It was a sultry evening. Flowers were being sold in profusion on street corners. Hurdy-gurdies played war tunes in the gutter.
"We're sorry you both had so much to do," said Betty, demurely. "And that you don't appreciate May parties," added Mary. "And haven't a proper feeling for hurdy-gurdies," finished Madeline. "Ah, but you can't tell what deep philosophical problems we may have been working out answers for down in Paradise," said Miss Ferris, playfully. Betty slipped a soft arm around Eleanor's waist.
So he went on, until by and by, above the noise of the drum and cymbals outside the penny theatre, and the hurdy-gurdies, and the showmen bawling down by the waterside, he heard voices yelling and a rush of folks running down the street past his door.
This coiffure resembles that of the Bordelaise, but it is not so small, nor is it folded so coquettishly. There was much love-making sometimes exquisitely comic by its rustic naivete and there was a good deal of dancing to the maddening music of two screaming hurdy-gurdies.
Most of his extraordinary harangue was like an eruption of Vesuvius, but the laugh he occasionally gave showed that he was talking about as much for his own amusement as for ours. He was terribly severe on Parliament, which he described as "endless babblement and windy talk the same hurdy-gurdies grinding out lies and inanities."
