So much for llamas. Now the "guanaco." It is neither, but an animal of specific difference. It exists in a wild state in the high mountains, though, with great care and trouble, it can be domesticated and trained to carry burdens as well as its congener the llama. In form it resembles the latter, but, as is the case with most wild animals, the guanacos are all alike in colour.
They were fine specimens of the native races, which had been almost entirely swept away in 1833 by General Rosas, tall in stature, with arched forehead and olive complexion. They were dressed in guanaco skins, and carried lances twenty feet long, knives, slings, bolas, and lassos, and, by their dexterity in the management of their horses, showed themselves to be accomplished riders.
It was then that they proposed the guanaco hunt to the officers of the ship; their own visit to the Straits being simply in pursuit of game. The morning of the hunt the captain described as unusually warm for that region, even in January, and not particularly clear; there was a haze that was just not a fog.

I do not know what our four-footed companion thought of it, but he certainly enjoyed the idea of catching a guanaco so did we, indeed, more than anything else. We had got within five hundred yards of the nearest without being discovered. Hitherto we had gone on very cautiously. Our eagerness overcame our discretion. We left cover and ran on exposing ourselves to view.
In all there are four distinct species of them the Llama proper, the Paca or Alpaca, the Guanaco, and the Vicuna. The Llama and Paca are both held in a state of domestication; the former as a beast of burden, and the latter for its hair or wool.
