In his historical novel, Die Letzten ihres Geschlechts, M. Ruediger has graphically described the scenes enacted throughout Germany when Gregory's inhuman order was put into effect. Similar statements regarding priestly celibacy are found in Art. XXVII of the First, and in Art. XXIX of the Second Helvetic Confession of the Reformed.
Where can be found "confirmation" stronger than these "proofs from holy writ"? And where a more magnificent picture of the luxury, the sumptuous Oriental splendor of this nation at that period, than in Ezekiel, chapters xxvii., xxviii.? What an eloquent apostrophe to Tyre "thou that art situate at the entry of the sea, a merchant of the people, for many isles."
He sums up the fourth chapter of his eighth book with the conclusion that "le palais de la royauté ne fut pas enlevé de vive force, mais abandonné par ordre de Louis XVI." And in a note he affirms that the entire number of killed and wounded on the part of the rioters did not exceed one hundred and sixty "en chiffres ronds." Bertrand de Moleville, ch. xxvii. Wherefore one of our doctors objecteth, that we lift up our eyes and our hands to heaven, and worship God, yet we do not worship the heaven; that a man going to bed, prayeth before his bed; that David offered the sacrifices of thanksgiving, in the presence of all the people, Psal. cxvi; that Paul, having taken bread, gave thanks before all them who were in the ship, Acts xxvii. 36; that the Israelites worshipped before Moses and Aaron, Exod. iv. 31.

Now let the reader judge.
Even in those words the adversary was foiled and for ever. For when he seemed to be forsaken, his cry was still, "My God! my God!" "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" ST MATTHEW xxvii. 46.
XXVII. If in this kind of life thy body be able to hold out, it is a shame that thy soul should faint first, and give over, take heed, lest of a philosopher thou become a mere Caesar in time, and receive a new tincture from the court. For it may happen if thou dost not take heed.
He never used the name of AUGUSTUS, although he inherited it, in any of his letters, excepting those addressed to kings and princes. XXVII. He had such an aversion to flattery, that he would never suffer any senator to approach his litter, as he passed the streets in it, either to pay him a civility, or upon business.
XXVII. List of Spanish forces employed in the invasion of Georgia, and of Oglethorpe's to resist them, XXVIII. History of the silk culture in Georgia, written by W.B. Stevens, M.D., of Savannah,
XXVII. Now the greater part of the enemy and their best soldiers were cut to pieces in their ranks, for in order to prevent the line from being broken the soldiers of the first rank were fastened together by long chains which were passed through their belts. The fugitives were driven back to their encampments, when a most tragic scene was exhibited.
