On it was lithographed 'Miss Isabel Morrison, and a written address, 'Corso de Madrid, Buenos Ayres, had been lightly scratched out in one corner. Fenwick put down the card. 'Well, he said, sharply 'and if I am what then? Welby began to speak paused and cleared his throat. He was standing, with one hand lightly resting on the table, his eyes fixed on Fenwick.
"I thought you wouldn't have much difficulty, for there are only two plantations on the island, this and Mr. Fitzgerald's. I don't know that there are any other dwellings except the huts of the negroes." She spoke the last rather in a tone of inquiry; but Flora merely answered that she had once passed the Welby plantation in a barouche.
'It's no joke, Eugénie, this sipping business Where were we? Oh, well, of course I knew we should have to take it and I don't say I'm not pleased with it. But two hundred! 'Not a penny less, said Eugénie 'and the apotheosis of my frock alone is worth the money. Two hundred for that and two-fifty for the other? 'Welby told me that actually was the price he had put on it!
He returned to say that the tide had washed away the footprints, and that he found no vestige of the lost one. At dawn he started for the plantation, whence, after fruitless inquiries, he rode to the Welby estate. Mrs. Delano had requested the household servants not to mention having seen a small young lady there, and they had nothing to communicate.
Before he could answer the question he thus put to himself, his brougham stopped at the door of the minister whom Welby had contributed to bring into power. That night there was a crowded muster of the fashionable world at the great man's house. It happened to be a very critical moment for the minister.
I was, therefore, not very well qualified to come to a decision. Suddenly I recollected a visit paid to us by Tom Welby, an old schoolfellow, after his first trip to sea, and what a jolly life I thought he must lead as he described his adventures, and how fine a fellow he looked as he strutted about with his dirk at his side, the white patch on his collar, and the cockade in his hat.
He was busying himself with a cardboard model, on which he had been trying the effect of certain arrangements, when he heard a knock at his door. 'Entrez! he said, in astonishment. At this season of the year the hotel kept early hours, and there was not a light to be seen in the cour. The door opened. On the threshold stood Arthur Welby. Fenwick gazed at him open-mouthed.
'Let Arthur see the pose. She sat down obediently. Fenwick heard an exclamation from Welby, and a murmured remark to Lord Findon; then Welby turned to the painter, his face aglow. 'I say, I do congratulate you! You are making a success of it! The whole scheme's delightful. You've got the head admirably.
But Parson John did not perceive this, for Welby listened to that gentleman's eulogies on the Ideal school without troubling himself to contradict them. He had grown too indolent to be combative in conversation, and only as a critic betrayed such pugnacity as remained to him by the polished cruelty of sarcasm.
The necessary arrangements were soon made; and when Flora was transformed into Miss Welby, she smiled very faintly as she remarked, "How queer it seems to be always running away." "This is the last time, my child," replied Mrs. Delano. "I will keep my little bird carefully under my wings."
