The largest arm-chair was drawn up to a table covered with books and magazines: in the chair sat Mrs. Louder, reading. At Tilly's entrance she started and turned her head, and then one could see that the tears were streaming down her cheeks. "Now, MOTHER!" exploded Tilly. Kicking the door open, she marched into the bed-chamber.
"Yes," went on Agnes, "I know, because my cousins have had several of those dresses, and I'm quite familiar with them." Peggy, sitting there in her odd pretty dress, saw with pity the distress in her friend Tilly's face.
Even now, when all was lost, Tilly's veterans fought with extreme bravery and resolution; but at last, when Butler had fallen, and Schomberg and Montecuculi, and a few other officers had succeeded in escaping, all resistance ceased. Four colonels, 36 officers, and 3000 men were killed. Fifty colours and ten baggage wagons, laden with gold and silver plate, were captured.
After the taking of this town, the king, hearing of Tilly's approach, and how he had beaten Gustavus Horn, the king's field-marshal, out of Bamberg, began to draw his forces together, and leaving the care of his conquests in these parts to his chancellor Oxenstiern, prepares to advance towards Bavaria.
Tilly's big bosom rose and fell in a sigh. "What's a lark never is." Jinny giggled, agreeably scandalized: "What things you do say, Till! Don't let ma 'ear you, that's all." "Ma be blowed! 'Ow does this look now, Polly?" And across the wax-cloth Tilly pushed a copybook, in which she had laboriously inscribed a prim maxim the requisite number of times.
Together they passed on to Wurtzburg, where they joined Oxenstiern and the Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel. General Banner, with the fourth corps, was at Augsburg, opposed to Cratz, who was at the head of the remains of Tilly's old army. Slipping away from his foes he marched to Windsheim, and was there joined by a body of troops under Bernhard of Weimar.
Saying this, he folded up the document, and carefully put it in the pocket of his coat. Then, turning round towards his troop, he gave the word of command, "Tilly's dragoons, wheel to the right!" After this, he added, in an undertone, yet loud enough for his words to be not altogether lost to those about him, "And now, ye butchers, do your work!"
That it was a planned movement to separate her from Peggy, Tilly did not doubt; for once out on the piazza, Agnes, with a whispered word to Amy, turned sharply about in the opposite direction to that where Mrs. Smith and her niece were sitting. A color like a red rose sprang to Tilly's cheeks as she glanced across at Peggy, and bowed to her with a swift little smile.
There was one hen a black and ragged one, with only half a tail, and a downtrodden aspect which actually went the length of jumping up on little Tilly's knee, and feeding out of her lap. It even allowed her to stroke its back, but it evidently permitted rather than enjoyed the process.
To Tilly's deputies, who were entertained in a princely style, he gave a still plainer answer on the occasion. "Gentlemen," said he, "I perceive that the Saxon confectionery, which has been so long kept back, is at length to be set upon the table. But as it is usual to mix with it nuts and garnish of all kinds, take care of your teeth."
