That invitation sounds all through Scripture, and, perhaps, there was lingering in our Lord's mind, besides the reference to the rock that yielded the water, some echo of the words of the second Isaiah: 'Ho! every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters. 'Nay! said Christ, 'not to the waters, but to Me. And then we hear from His own lips the same invitation addressed to the woman of Samaria, with the difference that to her, an alien, He pointed only to the natural water in the well that had been Jacob's, whereas, to these people, the descendants of the chosen race, He pointed to the miracle in the desert, and claimed to fulfil that.
As yet doth he that saith, I could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even he as yet, doth not think himself to have apprehended, and forgetteth those things which are behind, and reacheth forth to those which are before, and groaneth being burthened, and his soul thirsteth after the Living God, as the hart after the water-brooks, and saith, When shall I come? desiring to be clothed upon with his house which is from heaven, and calleth upon this lower deep, saying, Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.
In order to obtain food, clothes, thou must work: a merchant will order from thee a cellar, a warehouse; the signore, stables and dog kennels. Now at last thou hast procured thyself daily bread, a decent habit for thy bones and flesh: inspiration thirsteth for its nourishment, demanding from thy soul images and forms. Thou createst, thou art bringing thy Ideal to fulfilment.
Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate. I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah. Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
'Ho, every one that thirsteth. That designation includes us all. 'And he that hath no money. Who has any? Notice that the persons represented in our text as penniless are, in the next verse, remonstrated with for spending 'money. So then the penniless man had some pence away in some corner of his pocket which he could spend.
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
My sins may rise mountains high, but His mercies are a great deep which will cover the mountains to their very summit. Ah! my sin is enormous, God's mercy is inexhaustible. 'With Thee is plenteous redemption, and He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. 'My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. PSALM xiii. 2. This whole psalm reads like the sob of a wounded heart.
There is in prayer an unbosoming of a man's self, an opening of the heart to God, an affectionate pouring out of the soul in requests, sighs, and groans. And again, "My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? Mark, "I pour out my soul." It is an expression signifying, that in prayer there goeth the very life and whole strength to God.
"Harmony is at home only in the ideal world harmony which is unknown even among the gods harmony, whom I may know, and yet may never comprehend whom I love, and may never possess whom I long for, and who flies from me. "I am as one that thirsteth, and harmony as the remote, unattainable well I am as one swimming in a wide sea, and she is the land which recedes as I deem myself near to it.
"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye" to this watering-place! Crowd around this Bethesda this morning! Oh, you sick, you lame, you troubled, you dying crowd around this Bethesda! Step in it! Oh, step in it! The angel of the covenant this morning stirs the water. Why do you not step in it? Some of you are too weak to take a step in that direction.
