But what, then, are we to do to get out of this dilemma? You have only to accept the Vedic doctrine of the origination of the world. Others explain the above Sutra as meant to refute an objection against the doctrine of Brahman being the general cause. But this does not suit the arrangement of the Sutras, and would imply a meaningless iteration.
That that which makes the difference between plurality and unity is the presence or absence of differentiation through names and forms, is distinctly declared in the text, 'Now all this was undifferentiated. Up. And, moreover, it is proved by the two Sutras, II, 1, 33; 35, that the distinction of the several individual souls and the stream of their works are eternal.

These two ideas, the efficacy of physical discipline and the acquisition of superhuman powers, have powerfully affected all schools of religious thought in India, including Buddhism. They are not peculiar to the Yoga, but still it is in the Yoga Sûtras that they find their most authoritative and methodical exposition.
From the time of Śankara onwards nearly all Hindu theologians of the first rank expounded their views by writing a commentary on the Brahma Sûtras, an authoritative but singularly enigmatic digest of the Upanishads. Śankara's doctrine may be summarized as absolute monism which holds that nothing really exists but Brahman and that Brahman is identical with the soul.

These hindrances may be dormant, or worn thin, or suspended, or expanded. Here we have really two Sutras in one. But, an objection is raised, the text 'He reaches all desires together in the wise Brahman, in using the word 'together' shows that even in the state of Release the soul is different from Brahman, and the same view is expressed in two of the Sutras, viz. In most of the other sutras the burden of thought is ontology. Doctrinally, Buddhism seems to be less a religion than a system of philosophy. Hundreds of volumes in the canon concern themselves almost wholly with ontological speculations.
