Now the personal experience of each one of us assures us that many sets of natural phenomena take place in perfectly invariable sequences, in sequences so invariable as to appear to be, and to be familiarly spoken of as, manifestations or operations of certain inflexible laws of nature. Within our experience there has never been a single deviation from any such law.

Moreover, classification necessarily advances pari passu with rationality the classification of things with the classification of relations. For things that belong to the same class are, by implication, things of which the properties and modes of behaviour the co-existences and sequences are more or less the same; and the recognition of this sameness of co-existences and sequences is reasoning.

We thus perceive that, in the chain of sequences relating to the benevolent feelings, there are three distinct steps, two of which are entirely under the control of the will. A man has it entirely in his power to place himself in contact with objects of distress, and to follow out the call of duty in considering their circumstances, and entering into their feelings.

So far from mankind being thrown out of work according to your notion," concluded Trost, with a peculiar nasal note of scorn, "if it were not for your incurable dilettanteism in science as in all other things if you had once understood the action of any delicate machine you would perceive that the sequences it carries throughout the realm of phenomena would require many generations, perhaps aeons, of understandings considerably stronger than yours, to exhaust the store of work it lays open."

They are, in the true sense of the word, necessary. Such are mathematical and merely logical sequences. There is no getting out of it. Haeckel may talk as much fatalism about that fact as he pleases: it really must be. If Jack is the son of a miller, a miller is the father of Jack. Cold reason decrees it from her awful throne: and we in fairyland submit.

In time we may come to realize that physical soundness and mental soundness are but sequences of moral soundness, or, in other words, that a sound body and a sound mind are manifestations of a right spirit. But, for the present, we may waive this consideration and think of the three phases of integrity physical, mental and moral.

But Yates was on the defensive, even when the oval was in her possession, and Harwell experienced the pleasurable and, in truth, unaccustomed exultation that comes with the assurance of superiority. Harwell's greatest ground-gaining plays now were the two sequences from ordinary formation and full-back forward.

Science whether physical or metaphysical has its great truths, and so has Revelation; the realm of each is distinct while yet their processes are incomplete: and it is the hope and firm belief of many God-fearing scientists that the patient, reverent searching of to-day into God's works, of matter and of mind, as it collects the myriad facts and classifies them into such orderly sequences as indicate the laws of their being, will confirm to men's reason their faith in the revealed Word.

His greatest genius has been to make romance out of the commonplace sequences of life." She sprang up and walked to the mantel. "That is true," she said. "I never show that side of me to him. He would not know what strange spirit moved me. I inherited none of it from him or my mother. I never show that side to anybody." "Except to me," I said mischievously.

DOWN the road, kicking up the dust until he marched, soldier-wise, in a cloud of it, that rose and grimed his moist face and added to the heavy, brown powder upon the wayside weeds and flowers, whistling a queer, tuneless thing, which yet contained definite sequences the whistle of a bird rather than a boy approached Johnny Trumbull, aged ten, small of his age, but accounted by his mates mighty.
