It is true that I have read Shakespeare and even his commentators, which gives me the pull over Shakespeare himself; it is true that I agree with the persons who haven't read him that he is the greatest poet the world has ever seen or is likely to see; it is true that Shakespeare is part of my life and thought; but somehow my interest in him does not extend to his second-best bed, and I do not greatly yearn to see the room in which Bacon was not born.

Margaret smiled. "Hurry, dear," she said, "Joe will have to go, and I know he wants to see you." Hanny put on her shoes and stockings, and Margaret helped her with the rest, washed her and just tied up her hair with a second-best ribbon. Joseph had eaten his breakfast and was impatiently waiting to say good-by. John was off already. Nothing had happened. The world was going on as usual.

These negatives of the strong and stinging griefs and limitations of the present are perhaps our second-best way of coming to some prophetic vision of that great future.

Sary said, giggling like a veritable school-girl. Polly watched her depart with the coveted dress over her arm, then she turned to Eleanor. "All the help are going crazy, it seems to me!" Although comely, she was homely a "downright" girl, scorning and hating all manner of pretentiousness. She had a fine best dress, and when she put it on everybody knew that it was her best; a stranger would have known. Whereas of a coquette none but her intimate companions can say whether she is wearing best or second-best on a given high occasion.

"Your experience in life has been fortunate," I replied, contenting myself with the second-best cake. "But it has not been long. When you are a man " "A man! I would rather die young than grow up to be one." "Indeed?" I exclaimed, surprised at this outburst. "I hate men." "Ah, perhaps then, your experience has not been as fortunate in men as in cakes." "No, it hasn't.

Girls in white frocks; boys in Sunday suits; all uncomfortable in freshly donned winter flannels since this was to be a sort of out-doors party and there must be no afterclaps of croup; and elders in their second-best attire, worn with an affected indifference of its just happening so. Said Mrs. Turner to Mrs. Clackett: "Course we wasn't asked.

They tried to light it with paper and they tried to light it with matches; they tried to light it with Vesuvian fusees from the pocket of father's second-best overcoat that was hanging in the hall.
