England and Russia are the only countries in Europe that make no distinction between press offenders and ordinary criminals. The brutal treatment which was meted out to Mr. Truelove in his seventieth year, when his grey hairs should have been his protection, is what the outspoken sceptic must be prepared to face.

Pilate the Law of Separate Nations had found her guilty of sedition; Herod the miracle-monger at one instant and the sceptic at the next the Scientist, in fact had declared her guilty of fraud; Caiaphas had condemned her in the name of National Religion.

To what purpose is this overlapping and conflict? The reluctant tribute of the ancient sceptic "See how these Christians love one another" has become the modern worldling's cynical and familiar jibe; and when to the spectacle of Christian disunion is added the observation that professing Christians of all denominations appear to differ from other men, for the most part, "solely in their opinions" and not in their lives, the impulse to cry "A plague upon all your Churches" may seem all but irresistible.

A sceptic, on the other hand, is under no such obligation to preconceived ideas, and is therefore free to draw unbiassed inferences as to the character of God, if he exists, to the extent which such character is indicated by the sphere of observable nature.

When, however, we speak of philosophy as a criticism of knowledge, it is necessary to impose a certain limitation. If we adopt the attitude of the complete sceptic, placing ourselves wholly outside all knowledge, and asking, from this outside position, to be compelled to return within the circle of knowledge, we are demanding what is impossible, and our scepticism can never be refuted.

The opinions, the character, the achievements of the man, matter very little. He may be a sceptic like the gentle Sieur de Montaigne, or a saint like the bitter son of Monica, but when he tells us his own secrets he can always charm our ears to listening and our lips to silence.

'Lay that flattering unction to your soul." "Ah, you are right he must have thought me very " "Beautiful, no doubt." "Beautiful! I hate the word, Lumley. I wish I were not handsome I might then get some credit for my intellect." "Humph!" said Ferrers, significantly. "Oh, you don't think so, sceptic," said Florence, shaking her head with a slight laugh, and an altered manner.

When the heart is given willingly, all longing ceases and the future is viewed with serenity. Stella. My future contains something which might cause even the most valiant to fear. Doctor. Of what are you talking? You have called me a sceptic, but it is I who says: who loves, believes. Stella. What then? Doctor. Who doubts? Stella. Doctor. Doctor. Princess, I do not inquire.

But then, in almost every characteristic the Irishman differed from his employee. While Jim's word was never questioned even by the veriest sceptic of the plains, McLagan was notoriously the greatest, most optimistic liar in the state of Montana. A reputation that required some niceness of proficiency to retain. McLagan's ranch was known as the "AZ's."

As the genial warmth to the informing light, even so is the predisposing Spirit to the revealing Word." If I should reason thus but why do I say IF? I have reasoned thus with more than one serious and well-disposed sceptic; and what was the answer? "YOU speak rationally, but seem to forget the subject.
