The theological beliefs of the time became the controlling influence in Western civilization. There has never been any religious crisis of this kind before, and any attempt at exact comparisons with the past are here bound to be misleading and distorting. Even the extreme assailant of pagan religions, like Lucretius, had no basis for the critical attitude as the contemporary sceptic.

A stupid, "unintelligent sceptic" woman put us all out of harmony by making inane suggestions, always declaring that "she would not for the world interfere with the conditions," but doing so all the same.

His own hidden self rose at last to the struggle with a kind of angry joy, eager at once to conquer the woman and to pierce the sceptic. "Listen to me, Laura!" he said, bending over her. "That was more than I can bear that calls me out of my tent. I have tried to keep my poor self out of sight, but it has rights. You have challenged it. Will you take the consequences?"

Henry looked up at that moment with a seraphic smile. "Isn't he wonderful, sir?" asked Bones in hushed ecstasy; "you won't believe what I'm going to tell you, sir you're such a jolly old sceptic, sir but Henry knows me positively recognizes me! And when you remember that he's only four months old why, it's unbelievable."

It is this: I am no longer a sceptic. I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ." "Eh? What? Hubert!" The older man's face passed in lightning changes from stages of wonder to joy, and he sprang from his chair. He grasped his son's hand across the table. "Hubert!" he repeated, "my dear boy!" His voice choked on the last word.

I was still a sceptic, but at least I was an inquirer, and when I heard some old-fashioned critic saying that there was nothing to explain, and that it was all fraud, or that a conjuror was needed to show it up, I knew at least that that was all nonsense.

She longed for his first leave, so that she could parade him before the town, in the event of there being a lurking sceptic who still refused to believe that he had joined the Army. Conspicuous in the drawing-room, framed in silver, stood a large full-length photograph of Doggie in his new uniform.

Among other things Charles II. represented one thing which is very rare and very satisfying; he was a real and consistent sceptic. Scepticism, both in its advantages and disadvantages, is greatly misunderstood in our time. There is a curious idea abroad that scepticism has some connection with such theories as materialism and atheism and secularism.

The sceptic sees Their operation, but beholds not Him, “Wherefore a God!” he cries, “the world itself Suffices for itself!” and Christian prayer Ne’er praised him more, than does this blasphemy. God’s world could not possibly be a conglomeration of chances; it must be orderly, and the fact that it is so proves its dependence.

It is such an age, dark, confused, shameful, that the sceptic and the scorner must face, when they turn their backs upon those ancient shrines where the flames of faith and integrity and devotion are flickering like the deserted altar-fires of a forsaken worship.
