With that Hugo picked out some twenty of his most trusted men and bade us follow him. So we started up the cliff side by a little path that wound upward amid the gorse. And still all the time as we toiled with foot and hand at climbing, upon the summit sat the Sarrasin, as though with a proud air deriding our attack. "Whom seek you, good gentlemen?" he cried to us as we climbed below.

"Ding-dong!" rang out the alarm bell from the tower hasty and quick, and ere twenty pulls at the rope, the townsmen were all around, and I was drawn into the market-place, and there at the head of the Rue des Vaches I sang out lustily "Good men, good citizens and sons of St Pierre, make fast your defences, and man your walls this night; the fleet of Le Grand Sarrasin is anchored in Moulin Huet."

By this sudden descent into a very common proverbial expression, Sarrasin meant to intimate that they were getting themselves into a difficult position, in which they were sure to reap both danger and responsibility.

'Yes, I think I am right, Sarrasin answered confidently. 'You see, we have the pull on them, for if their game is simple, ours is simple too. They want Ericson to die we mean to keep him alive. You and I don't care two straws what becomes of our own lives in the row. 'Not I, by Jove! Hamilton exclaimed fervently. 'All right; then you see how easy it all is.

'Yes, I have thought of that, Ericson said meditatively; 'but then he signs himself in an odd sort of way. 'Eh, how is that? Sarrasin asked. 'It is his name, surely, is it not Hamilton?

Captain Sarrasin always professed that he found the illimitable spaces of the West too tranquillising for him. The sight of those great, endless fields, the isolation of those majestic mountains, suggested to him a recluse-like calm which never suited his quick-moving temper.

'But he has been set on by someone to do this job, Sarrasin said, 'and we might get to know who is the someone that set him on. 'We shall not know from him, the Dictator replied; 'he probably does not know who are the real movers. No; if there is anything serious to come it will come from better hands than his. No, my dear and kind friends, we can't get any further with him.

'I have been thinking it over and I tell you I don't like it! 'What I can't make out, the girl said, not impatiently but very gently, 'is what you don't like in the matter. Is there anything wrong with this Captain Sarrasin? He seems an old dear. 'This is how it strikes me. He never came to this house until after his Excellency the Dictator made up his mind to settle here.

'Well, perhaps it would seem to him wrong not to let out the whole thing at once to the authorities, or not to refuse to receive any suspicious persons into the house at all, and that isn't, by any means, what you and I are wanting just now, Captain Sarrasin! 'Why, certainly not, the old soldier said, with a beaming smile. 'What a clever girl you are!

Sarrasin's room for a moment, and I shall keep my eyes about me, I can tell you. The more people we have awake and on the alert, the better always provided that they are people whose nerves we can trust. As I tell you, Hamilton, I can trust the nerves of Mrs. Sarrasin. I have told her to be on the watch and she will be.
