But Rolf carried the case before M. Kollsen: and M. Kollsen, glad of every opportunity of discoursing on this subject, came and took Rolfs seat, and said all he could think of in contempt of the spirits of the region, till Erica's blood ran cold to hear him.
The following one is particularly recommended by Prof. P. H. Rolfs, to whom our knowledge of the disease is due: Preparation of sulphur spray. Place 30 pounds of flowers of sulphur in a wooden tub large enough to hold 25 gallons. Wet the sulphur with 3 gallons of water, stir it to form a paste. In a few minutes it becomes very hot, turns brown, and becomes a liquid.
The fog and the pirates had overtaken and frightened many in the fiord with whom Nipen had no quarrel. Rolfs imprisonment, and all the sorrows that belonged to it, had been owing to his own imprudence. The appearance of a double sun the night before was nothing uncommon, and was known to take place when the atmosphere was in a particular state.
Prof. P. H. Rolfs, Director of the Florida experiment station, reports that among the millions of volunteer, or wild, tomatoes he has seen growing in the abandoned tomato fields in Florida, he has never seen a plant with fruit which could not be easily distinguished from that of the true Cherry tomato.
Professor Rolfs, of Florida, mentions a case where the tomatoes in a field sloping to the southeast and protected on the north and west by a strip of oak timber were uninjured by a spring frost that killed not only all the plants in neighboring fields, but those in the same field farther away from the protecting timber.
"Rolf, Rolf, a riddle! guess! try!" and Lili held up a strip of paper and rattled it before Rolfs eyes, repeating, "Guess, guess, Rolf." So the riddle-maker was now caught in his own meshes. "Well, at least leave me room to guess in," cried he, striking about him with his arms to make room. "You can't guess anything," cried little Hunne contemptuously, "I am going to Jule he knows."
Erlingsen promised to be wary on his return homewards, so as not to fall in with the two whom Rolf had put to flight. He said, however, that if by chance he should cross their path, he did not doubt he could also make them run, by acting the ghost or demon, though he had not had Rolfs advantage of disappearing in the fiord before their eyes.
A tall thin man stepped into Rolfs boat with the air of a sailor, and having shaken him warmly by the hand, assisted in two other gentlemen in black dresses, who showed by their movements that they were far from well accustomed to nautical adventure. While Rolfs boat proceeded up the voe, the other pulled towards the Lunnasting landing-place.
It was papa who put that in our heads; and it is the most original thing in the whole pattern. Erica has worked it beautifully, to be sure." "I think we have said quite enough about it," observed Erica, smiling and blushing. "I hope M. Kollsen will accept it. The down is Rolfs present." Rolf rose, and made his bow, and said he had had pleasure in preparing his small offering.
It made his countenance almost gay to think of this, even while stared at by men, women, and children, as a prisoner. "What is it?" whimpered Stiorna, "what are you a prisoner for, Hund?" "Ask them that know," said Hund. "I thought at first that it was on Rolfs account; and now that they see with their own eyes that Rolf is safe, they best know what they have to bring against me."
