The selection made by a single race or by a single century is not likely to be widely or permanently acceptable. Long years ago the Italians were wont to speak of the Four Poets, quattro poete, meaning thereby Dante, Petrarch, Ariosto, and Tasso. But this was a choice far too local and far too narrow.
For he is most careful to tell us the dress and appearance of each character. 'Racine abhorre la realite, says Auguste Vacquerie somewhere; 'il ne daigne pas s'occuper de son costume. Si l'on s'en rapportait aux indications du poete, Agamemnon serait vetu d'un sceptre et Achille d'une epee. But with Shakespeare it is very different.
He wrote: "Tolstoy, comme créateur, comme romancier, comme poète épique, pour mieux dire, est un des quatre ou cinq plus grands génies de notre siècle. Comme penseur, il est un des plus faibles esprits de l'Europe." Not all that, replies Remy de Gourmont; Tolstoy may be wildly mistaken, but he is never weak-minded.
The reality of wedlock more than fulfilled his dreams, and it seemed as if all his vague malheur d'etre poete were about to be buried in the deep bosom of connubial beatitude.
Did not the members of the French Academy the highest literary institution in the world strike a gold medal in his honour, with the inscription, "La medaille du poete moral et populaire"? M. Sainte-Beuve, the most distinguished of French critics, used a much stronger expression.
Elle me parut d'abord comme ces paysages sortis de l'imagination d'un peintre ou d'un poete, qui rassemble sous un coup d'oeil, tout ce que la campagne a de plus riant. Tout est neglige et naturel, champetre et meme un peu sauvage.
The French and Italian are as follows: Pierre Schlemihl. Paris, chez Ladvocat, 1822. This was revised by Chamisso in manuscript, who added a preface to it; but the translation was afterwards capriciously altered by the same publisher. Un Roman du Poete Allemand contemporain, Adelbert de Chamisso; traduit par N. Martin. Histoire merveilleuse de Pierre Schlemihl. Dunquerque, 1837.
The old satirist of the "Iambes," Auguste Barbier, wrote, immediately after the declaration of peace, a poem in which he rehearsed the incidents of the war, and commented on the absence from the list of its victims of a single distinguished writer. He said "La Muse n'a pas vu tomber un seul poète," and it was out of any one's power to refute the sinister and prosaic verse.
Jasmin possesses gold and silver vases, laurel branches, snuff-boxes, medals of honour, and a whole museum of similar gifts, inscribed with such characteristic and laconiclegends as 'Au Poete, Les Jeunes filles de Toulouse reconnaissantes! &c. Jasmin preserved a perfect shrubbery of such tokens; and each symbol had, of course, its pleasant associative remembrance.
The consciousness of being the instrument of these higher powers ought to outweigh all other joys for man; even in death he finds his life, his nest. Rudin stopped and dropped his eyes with a smile of involuntary embarrassment. 'Vous etes un poete, was Darya Mihailovna's comment in an undertone. And all were inwardly agreeing with her all except Pigasov.
