The shapes of thought in the man's mind tell their own story. And that is the art of picture-making when it uses the dramatic method. But it cannot always do so. Constantly it must be necessary to offer the reader a summary of facts, an impression of a train of events, that can only be given as somebody's narration.
When the little maid wearied of her organ and her picture-making, she seated herself at the card-table, and played l'hombre, or tarok, with two imaginary adversaries, enjoying the manner in which the copper coins won the gold ones. At noon, when the bell rang a third time, the man tapped at the door again, offered his gloved hand to the maid, and conducted her to the dining-room.
He choked and his voice rose to a scream. "Get up! Stoop close to the reflector and watch! Watch there, I say!" The thing which had launched me on my course of action was the fact that the picture-making box was not screwed to the table. The only thing which held it there was the soft mesh of wires!
A poem is twofold, presenting an actuality, and at the same time a tender lucent image thereof, like the reflection of a castle, standing on the edge of a lake, in the calm deep mirror before it: at one view we see the castle and its glistening counterpart. In the best poetry there is vivid picture-making: reality is made more visible by being presented as a beautiful show.
And then, suddenly, my picture-making thoughts swept out across low Essex flats to the only part of East Anglia with which I was familiar, and gave me a vision of burning farmhouses, and terror-smitten country-folk fleeing blindly before a hail of bullets, and the pitiless advance of legions of fair-haired men in long coats of a kind of roan-gray, buttoned across the chest with bright buttons arranged to suggest the inward curve to an imaginary waist-line.
Over streams and other places impassible to me, he carried me, but could not understand how so frail a thing could be so obstinate. During all my girlhood I saw no pictures, no art gallery, no studio, but had learned to feel great contempt for my own efforts at picture-making. A traveling artist stopped in Wilkinsburg and painted some portraits; we visited his studio, and a new world opened to me.
Their artistic instinct was free to attend to higher things, their knowledge of the science of picture-making keeping them from many petty mistakes that a modern artist falls into.
He was curiously incapable in the other; when occasionally he tries his hand at picture-making, in Thackeray's manner attempting to summarize an impression of social life among the Veneerings, of official life among the Barnacles his touch is wild indeed. Away from a definite episode in an hour prescribed he is seldom at ease.
The convent is vast and irregular it bristles with those picture-making arts and accidents which one notes as one lingers and passes, but which in Italy the overburdened memory learns to resolve into broadly general images. I rather deplore its position at the gates of a bustling city it ought rather to be lodged in some lonely fold of the Apennines.
The more one knows about what may be called the anatomy of picture-making how certain forms produce certain effects, certain colours or arrangements other effects, &c. the easier will it be for him to carry away a visual memory of his subject that will stand by him during the long hours of his labours at the picture.
