Of course, Northcote despised Hogarth. Abuse of that painter seemed to be one of the duties of the British historical artist of that day. Yet he paid him homage; he painted a series of pictures, Hogarthian in subject, and proved to the satisfaction of everybody, one would think, the absolute superiority of Hogarth. Mr. Northcote's moral subjects, illustrative of vice and virtue, in the progress of two young women, are not to be mentioned in the same breath with the 'Mariage
BOSWELL. In the first two editions after 'Paterson' is added 'eminent for his knowledge of books. See ante, iii. 90. Humphry, on his first coming to London, poor and unfriended, was helped by Reynolds. Northcote's Reynolds, ii. 174.
But he was not always so careful of your peace of mind," he added, with a laugh. Ursula looked at him with a wondering question in her eyes; but those tears were no longer there which had gone to Northcote's heart. "I don't know what papa means," she said, softly; and then, "I want to beg your pardon, please. I was very silly. Will you try to forget it, and not tell any one, Mr. Northcote?
Sir William Fraser's Disraeli is a very different figure from Sir Stafford Northcote's. The myth about the pocket Sophocles is rudely exploded. Sir William is certain that Disraeli could not have construed a chapter of the Greek Testament. He found such mythology as he required where many an honest fellow has found it before him in Lemprière's Dictionary.
To Miss Burney Johnson once said: 'Sir Joshua Reynolds possesses the largest share of inoffensiveness of any man that I know. Memoirs of Dr. Burney, i. 343. 'Once at Mr. Thrale's, when Reynolds left the room, Johnson observed: "There goes a man not to be spoiled by prosperity." Northcote's Reynolds, i. 82.
The coffin was opened again, and a lock of hair cut off; which she treasured to her dying day. Poor Goldsmith! could he have foreseen that such a memorial of him was to be thus cherished! One word more concerning this lady, to whom we have so often ventured to advert. She survived almost to the present day. Hazlitt met her at Northcote's painting-room, about twenty years since, as Mrs.
It was she who prevented the utterance of the half-dozen words trembling on Northcote's lips, to which Ursula had a soft response fluttering somewhere in her pretty throat, but which was not destined to be spoken to-night; and it was she who made Phoebe's music quite a simple performance, attended with little excitement and no danger.
'He alludes probably to the place of King's Painter; which, since Burke's reforming the King's household expenses, had been reduced from £200 to £50 per annum. Northcote's Reynolds, ii. 188. The place was more profitable than Johnson thought.
The host left every one at perfect liberty to scramble for himself. 'Rags' is certainly a strong word to apply to any of the company; but then strong words were what Johnson used. Northcote mentions 'the mixture of company. Northcote's Reynolds, ii. 94-6. See ante, iii. 375, note 2. The Mayor of Windsor. Rogers's Boswelliana, p. 211. The play was acted at Drury Lane Theatre, old Mr.
Perhaps, it is possible, Northcote's ministrations, had he been fully roused, would have been, in mere consequence of the reluctance of his mind, to undertake them, more real and impressive than those which Reginald went to discharge as a daily though serious duty; but in any case it was the Churchman whose mode was the more practical, the more useful.
