Voltaire held his tongue, according to his idea of holding his tongue, drawing, in his poem of La Loi naturelle, dedicated at first to the margravine of Baireuth and afterwards to the Duchess of Saxe-Gotha, a portrait of Frederick which was truthful and at the same time bitter: Voltaire's intimacy with the Great Frederick was destroyed it had for a while done honor to both of them; it had ended by betraying the pettinesses and the meannesses natural to the king as well as to the poet.

The large-flowered evening-primrose was also cultivated about the beginning of the last century in the gardens of the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, at Paris, where it was noticed by Lamarck, who at once distinguished it as an undescribed species.

C. Linnæus on the Benefit of Travelling in one's own Country. Instructio Peregrinatoris, Dissertatio. Præside C. Linnæo. 1759, 4to. Mémoire Instructif sur la Manière de rassembler, de préparer, de conserver, et d'envoyer les diverses Curiosités d'Histoire Naturelle. Par Turgot. 1758. 8vo.

Spurzheim, entitled, "A Sketch of the Natural Laws of Man;" and he refers, somewhat incidentally, to Volney's "Law of Nature," published originally as a Catechism, and afterwards reprinted under the title, "La Loi Naturelle; ou, Principes Physiques de la Morale."

Aristote disait que 'Si l'art de bâtir était dans le bois, cet art agirait comme la nature. A la place de l'art de bâtir M. Darwin met l'election naturelle, et c'est tout un: l'un n'est pas plus chimérique que l'autre." And this is really all that M. Flourens can make of Natural Selection.

A man of letters, Buffon saw before him the opportunity to write a natural history of the earth and its inhabitants; and he set to work with a zeal that lasted until his death in 1788, at the age of eighty-one. His great work, 'L'Histoire Naturelle, was the outcome of these years of labor, the first edition being complete in thirty-six quarto volumes.

Paris, 1722. 2 vols. 4to. This work, drawn up chiefly from the memoirs of the missionaries, treats of the political, military, and moral state of the island, and more briefly of its produce, animals, &c. This briefness is compensated in the following work: 837. Essai sur I'Histoire Naturelle de St. Domingue. Par le P. Nicolson. Paris, 1766. 8vo. Ed. Long's History of Jamaica. 3 vols. 4to. 1774.

Gervais, also, in the "Histoire Naturelle des Insectes: Aptères," indicates a considerable diversity existing between the Lepismidæ and Poduridæ, though they are placed next to each other. Lubbock has given us a convenient historical view of the opinions of different authors regarding the classification of these insects, which we find useful.
