Bradley Birt in his interesting book on Chota Nagpur has given a photograph of certain Ho memorial stones, which would appear to resemble greatly the Khasi menhirs, and if his photograph is carefully examined, it will be seen that there are in rear of the stones what would seem to be stone cairns, very similar in appearance to the Khasi cineraria.
Derbyshire possesses a famous monument, that of Arbor Low, where a circle is surrounded by a rampart and ditch, while that of Stanton Drew in Somerset consists of a great circle A and two smaller circles B and C. The line joining the centres of B and A passes through a menhir called Hauptville's Quoit away to the north-east, while that which joins the centres of C and A cuts a group of three menhirs called The Cove, lying to the south-west.
These are raised in honour of some important member of the tribe who has died, and whose spirit is thought to have done some good to the tribe. If the benefits continue it is usual to increase the number of menhirs. The earliest burials in Japan are marked by simple mounds of earth. Menhirs properly so called, also known as LECHS in Brittany, are in reality isolated monoliths or single upright stones, often of considerable size. Sometimes large slabs are laid across them, when they arc, called covered avenues. The menhirs of El Wad, in Algeria, form long avenues, running front west to east. The Arabs call them ESSENAM, and according to tradition they were erected in fulfillment of a vow made in the hope of arresting the march of an enemy.
What is really certain, however, is that a definite plan was evidently followed, the distances between the alignments tallying exactly; the menhirs being set up in straight parallel lines gradually decreasing in size towards the east.
