It is natural for the Remington, and Winchester, and Marlin gun-makers to say, as they do, "Enforce the laws! Shorten the open seasons! Reduce the bag limit, and then it won't matter what guns are used! But, DON'T touch autoloading guns! Don't hamper Inventive Genius!" Is it not high time for American sportsmen to cease taking their moral principles and their codes of ethics from the gun-makers?

He found rare days, purposeless and wonderful as the voyages of ancient Norse Ericsens; days of learning Spanish and sitting quietly balancing a .32-20 Marlin, waiting for bandits to attack; the joy of repairing machinery and helping to erect a new crusher, nursing peons with broken legs, and riding cow-ponies down black mountain trails at night under an exhilarating splendor of stars.

Pike held down the struggling fool easily with one hand while he dispatched the second mate for marlin with which to tie the fellow's arms. "Bughouse," Mr. Pike grinned at me. "I've seen some bughouse crews in my time, but this one's the limit." "What are you going to do?" I asked. "The man will bleed to death." "And good riddance," he answered promptly.

There was a series of loud yells, which would seem to indicate that a few of the small shot contained in the shells with which the Marlin had been loaded must have reached their mark, and pricked the boys like so many needles would have done.

I dunno why we shouldn't believe in spirits and ghosts and dead men come alive. The Bible's full of such, ain't it? "Well, then! And what I tell you is as sure, as sure. I took the Marlin B. out of that harbor, being at the wheel. It was February, and a nasty snow squall come up and smothered us complete and proper. That schooner was a hummer; she sailed just so pretty as this one.

The others gathered round to see what Charley would say. And Charley realized that he was on trial with the men. "You heard what the forester said," he replied pleasantly. "We're to brush this trail out. I want it made as good as it was when it was first completed. Mr. Marlin said you were a mighty good crew and knew your business thoroughly. So you don't need any instructions from me."

Marlin handed the instrument to Charley and let him examine it. The battery was contained in a small box, and the mouthpiece and the receiver were in one piece, which was held alternately to the ear and the mouth. Then there were considerable lengths of wire to be attached to the telephone-lines. If a ranger could not climb a pole and attach his wires to the telephone-lines, Mr.

Marlin wished it to be, that the forester had taken him only as a last resort. And Charley was working hard to make good. He could hardly have taken a better way than the road he had chosen to make himself familiar with all the territory he was to guard, and so to prepare himself for the emergencies that lay ahead of him.

Aline took a strange interest in watching them sail slowly in endless succession across the blue, and would often sit hidden beside me at twilight among the tall reeds of the creek until with a lucky shot from the Marlin I picked up a brant-goose, or, it might be, a mallard which had rested on its southward journey, somewhat badly shattered by the rifle ball.

Marlin had worked himself up from the ranks. He had been a fire patrol and later a ranger, and then had attended the state forestry school, as the other district foresters had done. His unusual training, great diligence, intelligence, and untiring energy had made him one of the ablest men in the service.
