I was there, you remember but not as the groom. On one particular evening in June an evening that marked an important stage in the development of Oliver's fortunes the front porch, owing to Malachi's attentions, was in spotless condition steps, knocker, and round silver knobs. Sue and Oliver sat on the top step; they had stolen across from the Clayton porch on some pretended errand.
"But the raising of the dam is only preparatory, is it not, to their building their own houses?" observed Mrs Campbell. "Nothing more, ma'am; and I think the rest of the work is quite as wonderful." "But it is time to go to bed," observed Mr Campbell, "and we must, therefore, leave the remainder of Malachi's story till another evening."
It sounds like a prolongation of Malachi's voice when John the Baptist peals out his herald cry of one whose 'fan was in His hand, and who should plunge men into a fiery baptism, and consume with fire that destroyed what would not submit to be cast into the fire that cleansed.
In this way is being fulfilled Malachi's prediction that Elijah the Prophet should come before the great and dreadful day of the Lord, 'and He shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest the Lord come and smite the earth with a curse. You will find this in the last chapter of the Old Testament."
Pancoast was the archdeacon of the Noah's ark church one or two old grandmothers and a grave old owl of a family doctor were sure to fill the rocking-chairs. As for Richard Horn's marble steps they were never free from stray young couples who flew in to rest on Malachi's chairs and cushions.
We were not content with common jokes, such as sewing up the legs of Malachi's trousers while he slept, fixing his bunk, or putting explosives in his pipe we aspired to some of the higher branches of the practical joker's art.
Williamson of Cardrona in Peeblesshire, was a strange humorist, of whom Sir Walter told many stories. The allusion here is to the anecdote of the Leetle Anderson in the first of Malachi's Epistles.: See Scott's Prose Miscellanies, vol. xxi. p. 289. The Omen, by Galt, had just been published. See Sir Walter's review of this novel in the Miscellaneous Prose Works, vol. xviii. p. 333.
Coyness is sometimes fear in the timid heart that is stepping into the charmed circle for the first time. "There goes Ella Dorsey and Jack " she cried, springing down the steps. "Ella! El la!" and an answering halloo came back, and the two started from Malachi's steps and raced up the street to join their young friends.
It was one of those Friday evenings, then, when the smell of roast apples steeping in hot toddy came wafting out the portals of Malachi's pantry a smell of such convincing pungency that even the most infrequent of frequenters having once inhaled it, would have known at the first whiff that some musical function was in order. The night was to be one of unusual interest.
But the cash with which I set out having run short for family expenses I drew on Blackwood, through Ballantyne, which was honoured, for £25, to account of Malachi's Letters, of which another edition of 1000 is ordered, and gave it to Lady Scott, because our removal will require that in hand. This is for a fortnight succeeding Wednesday next, being the 8th March current.
