Liban was the daughter of Ecca, son of Mario, King of Munster. Ecca, having conquered the lordship of the half of Ulster, settled down with his people in the plain of the Gray Copse, which is now covered by the waters of Lough Necca, now Lough Neagh.

A magic well had sprung up in the plain, and not being properly looked after by the woman in charge of it, its waters burst forth over the plain, drowning Ecca and nearly all his family. Liban, although swept away like the others, was not drowned. She lived for a whole year, with her lap-dog, in a chamber beneath the lake, and God protected her from the water.

They have heard this all their lives, but always laugh at it with the same heartiness. Why, Shedad, son of Amroo, continued Baroni to an Arab near him, 'you have listened to this ever since you first tasted liban, and it still pleases you! 'I am never wearied with listening to fine language, said the Bedouin; 'perfumes are always sweet, though you may have smelt them a thousand times.

It is said that on many occasions men have passed upwards of a week with no other sustenance than water. This extensive branch of the Somal is divided into eighteen principal clans, viz.: 1. Rer Fatih. 3. Rer Abdullah. 4. Rer Bihidur. 5. Bohogay Salabay. 6. Adan Yakub. 7. Gerad Umar. 8. Gerad Yusuf. 9. Gerad Liban. 10. Nuh Umar. 11. Adan Said. 12. Rer Haji. 13. Dubbays. 14. Warlabah. 15.

But when the time comes when you will be called to battle, enter not upon it without the golden brooch I give you fastened in your cloak, for if you do harm will come to you. Now, kiss me, children; your little mother is waiting for you at the foot of the golden spear, but do not forget to say good-bye to Liban the Mermaid, exiled from the land she loves, and pining in sadness beneath the sea."

At the head of the table was the President of the United States; next to him Count von Koenitz, the German Ambassador, representing the Imperial German Commissioners, who had taken over the reins of the German Government after the abdication of the Kaiser; and, on the opposite side, Monsieur Emil Liban, Prince Rostoloff, and Sir John Smith, the respective ambassadors of France, Russia, and Great Britain.

And you both can soon return to Erin of the Streams, but I shall not see it till three hundred years have passed away, for I am Liban the Mermaid, daughter of a line of kings. But I may not keep you here. The Fairy Queen is waiting for you in her snow-white palace and her fragrant bowers. And now kiss me once more, Nora, and kiss me, Connla.

Are we to sit still and do nothing while the globe's crust freezes and our armies congeal into corpses?" He trembled with agitation. "Calm yourself, mon cher Prince!" said Monsieur Liban. "So far we have gained fifteen minutes and have lost nothing! But, as you say, whether or not the sender of these messages is responsible, there is a cause, and we must find it." "But how?

Say, there ain't any doubt in your minds that it's him, is there?" Von Koenitz looked cynically round the room. "There is not!" exclaimed Rostoloff and Liban in the same breath. The German laughed. "Speak for yourselves, Excellencies," he sneered. His tone nettled the wireless representative of the sovereign American people.

I have to thank my friend Professor A.A. Bevan for pointing out to me this passage. Many ancient cities had talismans on the preservation of which their safety was believed to depend. The Palladium of Troy is the most familiar instance. See Chr. L'abbé Béchara Chémali, "Naissance et premier âge au Liban," Anthropos, v. p. 735.
