I had one once that used to wake me up at two minutes past seven every morning as regularly as two minutes past seven came not an instant before, not an instant after. He turned the trick by jumping up on the bed and looking steadily into my face. Never touched me, you understand. Well, I waked this morning just after sunrise with a feeling that Kilo was there staring at me.
"It seems to be all you claim for it," he said; "but I fear the landlord of the Kilo House was right. We are not, many of us, ready for more books at present. If you return in a year or eight months " Eliph' Hewlitt smiled, and put his hand gently no the glossy black knee of the minister's best trousers. "True," he said, "true! Kilo has books.
At the time of my visit all these mines were placers and the operation was rather primitive. With modern machinery and enlarged white staffs will come a pretentious exploitation. The Government mines alone yield more than $2,000,000 worth of gold every year. Shortly before my arrival in the Congo what was heralded as the largest gold nugget ever discovered was found in the Kilo State Mine.
Smith did not think it necessary to mention that she was looking for local color and types. She was pleased when she heard that Eliph' Hewlitt, who had so interested her, was "working" Kilo.
The prices asked for food in the rubber districts we passed through were amazing. Sugar was bought at the rate of one to two milreis a kilo in a country where sugar-cane grows luxuriantly. The main dependence is the mandioc, or farina, as it is called. It is the bread of the country and is served at every meal. The native puts it on his meat and in his soup and mixes it with his rice and beans.
He'll leave the money in the bank till your wheat is safe. Go to the national bank in Kilo. Mention my name." Then Kurt told Anderson of the plot against his fortunes and his life. "Neuman! I.W.W.! German intrigue!" growled the rancher. "All in the same class!... Dorn, I'm forewarned, an' that's forearmed. I'll beat this outfit at their own game." They returned to Anderson's car.
"I was thinking of something about twice the size of this," he suggested. T. J. smiled and mentioned his rate for the space. It was not much, and Eliph' nodded. "Every week, until forbid," he said, "and I guess I'd better subscribe. I am going to live right her in Kilo right along now, and the man that don't take his home paper never knows what is going on." T. J. was pleased.
Eliph' Hewlitt offered to drive her to Clarence, but she refused him, and arranged to have one of the young boys, who had a faster horse, drive her to Kilo. The whole picnic leaned over the rail fence and watched until she was out of sight, and then went on with the lunch, which was just ready when her summons came. It was a severe blow to Eliph' Hewlitt.
The next evening Jim Wilkins, landlord of the Kilo House and proprietor of the Kilo Livery, Feed and Sale Stable, was sitting in front of his hotel, with his chair tipped back against the wall, trading bits of indolent gossip with Pap Briggs, when Eliph' Hewlitt drove his horse Irontail down Main Street, and pulled up before the hotel.
To miss a payment was almost as hideous in her eyes as to neglect to put a dime in the contribution plate each Sunday would have been. Her first thought was that Eliph' had come to rudely bear away the ten volumes of Sir Walter before the eyes of all the women of Kilo, and she gladly grasped at his last words. "Yes," she said quickly, "that's him. Let me introduce you. He he likes books."
