In my opinion, Ellen Irwin was a handsome, even an elegant young person: this, however, is in some degree a matter of taste.

Soon as the alarm was given, the officers leaped out of bed, and not waiting to dress, flew into the piazza, flourishing their pistols and shouting to the charge. Major Irwin, with more courage than discretion, fired a pistol, and would have tried another, but just as he had cocked it, he was stopped short by the stroke of a bayonet, which ended him and his courage together.

"You ill-tongued drunken ruffian," said he, "if you don't hold your scoundrell tongue, I'll pitch you head foremost out of the house. We must search, Mrs. M'Loughlin," said Irwin, "but it will be done as quietly as possible." They then proceeded through all the rooms, into which, singular as it may appear, they scarcely looked, until they came into that in which we left Mary M'Loughlin and Phil.

We had concluded to purchase the land on which one of our refineries was built and which was held on a lease from John Irwin, whom we both knew well. Mr. Irwin drew the contract for the purchase of this land on the back of a large manila envelope that he picked up in the office.

But he remembered him as one of his most interesting acquaintances and a very charming comrade notwithstanding those little foibles he had noticed. It struck seven o'clock when Heideck in full evening dress entered the Colonel's drawing-room. He felt a wave of keen joy surging through him when he noticed that it was empty, except for Edith Irwin.

We'll see 'em all back here to-morrow, or next day at the furdest. But I'm wonderin' whether there were any poor fellers left aboard the Stag Royal when she parted in the middle!" And old Jake Irwin looked round, shading his eyes from the flying spindrift, to see if he could discover any trace of human being either in the sea or washed up on the beach. But none was visible.

Early the next morning we began our march. Putnam and his men were in front, the light infantry in the centre, and the Rangers in the rear. Rogers had been shooting at a mark that morning with Lieutenant Irwin of the regulars. The enemy had overheard the firing and ambuscaded us. Putnam was leading his men. As he left the clearing, and entered the forest, the yelling and firing began.

In 1776 he volunteered in Captain William Alexander's company, under Colonels Adam Alexander and Robert Irwin, General Rutherford commanding, and marched to the Quaker Meadows, at the head of the Catawba, and thence across the Blue Ridge to the Cherokee country. Having severely chastised the Indians and compelled them to sue for peace, the expedition returned.

Presently, however, the wave receded; the awful feeling of being sucked back left him, and, opening his eyes, he saw that he was on terra firma, with the sea behind him. "Now run," shouted the seaman one Jake Irwin, who had been in the boat with him, "run, Master Trevose, before the next sea catches ye."

Ah, Georgie! Or, 'Georgie, are you in? Will you speak to Irwin? Then a long pause, and at the end of, say, ten minutes, a most strange, unearthly sigh, or a cough a perfectly intentional, forced cough, other times nothing but, 'Ah, Georgie! On one night there was a dreadful fog.
