The general cause of this latter disease is neglect of the ferrets and the hutches not being cleaned out regularly. I think the best bedding for ferrets is good oat straw, fresh every fortnight. Throw the straw in carelessly, and the ferrets will make their own beds. When breeding ferrets, never go near them more than you can help, as they are of a wild nature and liable to destroy their young.
The town through its length and breadth was shattered and dilapidated; whole families were homeless and packed like rabbits in hutches; the slaughtered dead, men and beasts, could not be buried quick enough; black death stalked abroad in the guise of what was called hospital typhus an epidemic fever of some kind.
We can see all we want to see without him; in fact, we got on very well before he came." So, as he passed, rich folk who were supping would pelt him with orange-peel and empty the dregs of their wine over his head; and poor folk, sleeping in their hutches, turned over, as the rays of the lanthorn fell on them, and cursed him for that disturbance.
"Well, we've got to have this stole," said the Terror in a tone of finality; and the matter settled, his brow smoothed to its wonted serenity. "But how?" said Erebus eagerly. "Things will occur to us. They always do," said the Terror with a careless confidence. They began to put the kittens into their hutches.
The buildings adjacent basked in its radiance. Their own eyes were almost blinded. Their mixed forms were painfully revealed. Frame hutches, split log cabins rubbed shoulders with buildings of steel frame and stone fronts. Thousand dollar apartments gazed disdainfully down upon hovels scarcely fit to shelter swine.
Look! they are all coming! they are pouring out of the Hutches! they are going to murder me! keep them off! keep them off!" and he howled and beat the air with his hands. Augusta, utterly overcome by this awful sight, knelt down by his side and tried to quiet him, but in vain.
Early in the afternoon, the whole course of the stream is dry. We have another market in our French watering-place that is to say, a few wooden hutches in the open street, down by the Port devoted to fish. They have not only a quarter of their own in the town itself, but they occupy whole villages of their own on the neighbouring cliffs.
David was fond of keeping animal pets birds in cages, and rabbits and guinea-pigs in hutches, the last so tame that he would release them on the grass to see them play with one another.
Fastened by chains to the mainmast were a number of grisly staghounds, who now began leaping and barking at me, and by the mizzen a huge puma was cramped in a little iron cage far too small even to give it turning room. Farther under the starboard bulwark were some big hutches containing a number of rabbits, and a solitary llama was squeezed in a mere box of a cage forward.
I hope all this is not very dull to read about. I know it was jolly good fun to do. Taking one thing with another, I don't know that we ever had a better time while it lasted. We got all the rabbits out of the hutches and put pink paper tails on to them, and hunted them with horns made out of The Times.
